Plastics (Resin) and Priming ... Advice Needed
« on: 04 August 2014, 09:37:06 AM »
Hi All,

This is a fairly basic question but ...

If I paint metal figures (and in fact I treat plastic figures the same, bar the fact they get a wash in mild soapy water first), I spray on a Grey Primer and then tackle the model with a brush.

However, I get nervous when doing that with a plastic kit/resin model.

With the resin model, I always worry that the primer paint won't stick to the smooth surface.  Certainly if I used a brush primer, like the one from Vallejo, it doesn't adhere particularly well in a first coat with lost of streaks.

With a plastic kit, I worry about the smooth surfaces and the detail being obscured by the primer.

I guess I'm over-thinking it but what to the kit model makers do? Just use an airbrush and put colour straight on to the plastic ...

Hello Ssendam

Even the plastic/resin kits must be washed first before they are primed.
Many times they still have the product for removing from the mold, attached and that product reacts against the primer.
Do the same as for plastic figures.

The idea of the primer is not to compleetly cover the surface of the model (if you do so much the better) but to leave a thin coat for the paint to addhere in the model.

Nothing special but i use gray primer from Tamiya. Nothing against vallejo but i find tamiya sticks in more surfaces than vallejo.

Cheers

Rui
