[Review] Plastic Skeletons Comparison

This has been in the works for a while, and here it is: My little review and comparison of Skeleton Warriors from the Oathmark range, by Wargames Atlantic and by Warlord Games (formerly Wargames Factory)!

Thanks for the review and comparisson; very useful  :)

And I sgree with you on the Wargames Factory skellies; they look the best imho and I never found them particularly fiddly myself. They also convert/kitbash like a dream  8)
Miniatures you say? Well I too, like to live dangerously...

Yeah, I like them a lot. I understand if people don't. And to be honest, if I drop a Wargames Atlantic or an Oathmark skeleton I don't mind; with a Warlord Factory skeleton I worry for a bit that something might have snapped (usually it doesn't because they're light). But if you need some skeletal parts lying around somewhere that's the go-to kit for me.

Thanks for the review. I own both the Oathmark and Wargames Atlantic boxes - they are nice figures and do mix well.

I still have a soft spot for the Wargames Factory skellies.  I use them exclusively for terrain where the ability to pose them is a huge selling point.  I have not purchased any of the other kits so thank you for the direct comparison.

Excellent and thorough review. And I agree, those WF are great for scenery as well!

An excellent review, thank you for taking the time.
 :)

I've also had some success smashing those kits together for my OGAM Hades force. I agree that the Warlord ones are fine, the only thing I struggled with was the connection at the ankle, I really have no idea who thought separate feet was a good idea...

Just as an aside, I also used some bits from the Mantic skeletons, which are a bit more monopose and obviously armoured, but have some cool extras on the sprue that scale well with the other kits.

@Burgundavia: Cheers! Yes, that's another neat thing about skeleton warriors - as long as there isn't too much or all too "corporade design" looking stuff on them you can mix them very freely. What do you think of the skulls on the Oathmark skeletons? Did you use them as is (because of nice helmets) or did you switch them?

@snitcythedog: Thanks very much. It's funny how much positive feedback I get especially in regards to the Wargames Factory skeletons. I like them too. They go perfectly well with the other manufacturers. On one of the chariot crews (with the big helmet, made from Wargames Atlantic parts) I put a pointing skeleton arm from the Wargames Factory box, and it looks somewhat flimsy, so I wouldn't say that bits (apart from weapons) are interchangeable between these two kits.

@Gunbird: Thank you! Yup. The additional posability and the slightly more delicate bones make for nice terrain-enhancers.

@JollyBob: Cheers! Yeah, a lot of time went into that review. Especially since at one point I had the bone-headed idea of freehanding shields. :D It's good to know that the Mantic skeletons scale well with the others. I had a quick look at them, but in the end decided to stick to these three boxes. I buy all these boxes myself, I don't monetize the articles in any way apart from maybe a bit of cheeky backdoor-advertising for my figure painting, so I have to look at cost and time I invest into these.

@blacksoilbill: Thanks very much!

Nice writeup. I think I have some WG factory skellies somewhere as well. You're right, fiddly but good end results.

This was a fantastic review! I love these sort of articles that compare similar models across lines. Cheers!

I have that Citadel box of skulls and have been eyeing the Oathmark skeletons. Glad to see they mix week together if not ideal.

@beefcake: Cheers! Yup, that's the thing - they do give good results and look like they'd fit into the body of a 28mm figure. I'm not a huge stickler for that, but a friend of mine is, and for this reason alone he expressed his preference for the Wargames Factory skeletons.

@sir_shvantselot: Thank you! That's good to hear. They got several nice things going for them (most of all I like the shields with all the nubs and the horny helmets. :D )

@Mr.White: Thanks, Sir. Yeah, that sort of article takes aaaaaages to do, but it's what I'd like to read, so I make them. And I kinda slipped into it. I had the WGF skeletons lying around for ages, I was actually excited for the Wargames Atlantic box when it was announced - and I don't tend to get excited about miniature releases much any more -, and the Oathmark ones I just got because I generally really like the Oathmark plastics and for comparison reasons. This isn't the most exiting or most hip way of presenting such a review, and in fact it gets way less resonance from a broad number of people than I thought, but I know that it will be here for years to come and people who try to find information about these kits get it [I hope it covers all the important parts people would want to know about them]. If this was three videos it would take way more time to get infos from it, at least the way I consume videos. Maybe others have figured out ways of making them useful if you need quick infos rather than just some time killer. So yeah. It probably won't get me any painting commission jobs, but I hope it's useful to people who like the things I like. :)

I’d much rather read an article that reviews and compares kits than see a video - so thank you for taking the time to pull this together.

I find most wargames videos incredibly slow paced, and too many have very poor audio / scripting to them. And not that many take advantage of video to give a good view of the models or sprues. So I’d rather read an article with some nice clear photos.

I ended up building them stock, not overly worried about them looking not cohesive. I have some mortek guard I'm going to build, so I'll have a whole mix.
