28mm 12th C Scots Spearmen
« on: 24 October 2024, 11:54:05 PM »
Anyone out there producing Scots with pointy sticks in 28mm suitable for the Battle of the Standard/ North Allerton etc? Ideally something along the lines of the Ian Heath illustration below. Bare legs, unarmoured, with or without beer coaster shield.

Haven't found anything so far. Recommendations for suitable proxies welcomed.

I am aware of the Crusader Dark Age Scots who are in suitable dress but the arms are posed in a way that doesn't really invite the use of 12 foot spears. Eureka also have some Norse Irish spearmen that may do at a pinch.

Have you looked at either WGA or GB dark age Irish. You'll likely have to source bucklers separately, but they "may" fit the bill for you.
And the helm, maybe a Spartan helm without edging?

Thank you! I have the WGA Irish and some of those should make a decent basis. Alas, most of the box are in trews or those Irish jackets but this could be a way of supplementing something. Helmets could be sourced from pretty much any Early Medieval/ Dark Ages box.

I can vouch for the Eureka Scots spearmen, lovely figures with long spears. They don’t come with shields but Nic would oblige if asked.

Wedtwind Productions’ Pict line had a pack called “Pictish warriors with long spears” :  https://www.westwindproductions.co.uk/index.php?route=product/product&path=192_69_147&product_id=835

Unfortunately, no picture of them on the website and they don’t seem to be available as the smaller packs that other figures in the range are. The clothes on some of their other picts are similar to the image in the original post, so these might be suitable for conversions. Most of the Westwind dark ages figures have separate heads, too, so it might be possible to ask for heads with helmets (they make a pack of pict heads with helmets, not sure if the helmets are too far out of period, though).

Might be worth sending an email to ask about the spearmen poses and helmet options.

Have you looked at the Ribalds from Antidiluvian miniatures? It might also be worth checking out the Footsore early medieval Welsh, Irish, and Picts too?

You've actually have quite a lot to choose from. For the non-Normanised Scots at Standard, any Dark Age Scots/Picts would do. You also have the Normanised Scots which were distinctive enough in arms and style of battle that that was noted. For those you can probably use some Norman miniatures.

Scheltrum might be worth a look too; their figures are from a later date but the spearmen would work

1st corps Picts? Swap out the provided spears with some longer steel ones from someone like Northstar.

Antediluvian do some great minis and you could get the shields from Wargames foundry
I have a bad case of prescient nostalgia. The future's not what it used to be.
