Here, Doggies! … Looking for Wolves
« on: October 25, 2024, 04:42:28 PM »
I’m looking for suggestions on a pack of wolves. Bonus if they can match the aesthetic and scale of the Oathmark orks. They wouldn’t be for wolf riders per day, but a pack of just wild/feral/dire wolves working with an ork warband.

Thanks!

Hi. Northstar have blister packs of 5. You could also look at Ral Partha and RAFM, the latter of which are, I think, on the large side.

How many do you want?

I had some lovely cheap wolves, but needed over a dozen so they're not necessarily all the best looking wolves...

Nice! I hadn’t seen those.
They look great to run with elves or humans but I’m looking for something a little more vicious for orks.

If money is no object, there are Games Workshop wolves:

Otherwise, I'd take Richard's recommendation and get the old Ral Partha wolves.

Yes, the RP ones are good.  You might also like the West Wind giant wolves:

I have a very large wolf pack here, problem is just trying to remember where they all came from... whenever I'm buying from a company that has wolves I don't have yet, I throw their's into the cart too.

These are the RAFM wolves:

They’re very much in the dire wolf/ warg category for size. I use them for mounts for my Oathmark wolf riders. They’re very similar to the Reaper Miniatures dire wolves.

Those are great miniatures, but they are very small. The riders designed for them are Ral Partha's "goblin imps", which are small enough to be used in 15mm. That isn't a problem if you're thinking of them as a pack of smallish natural wolves (rather than wargs or whatever), but they're not things that an Oathmark orc could conceivably ride. For example, if the Ral Partha orc pictured with them was standing upright, they would come up to his waist. He's one of the RP "giant goblins" (roughly the size of an Oathmark goblin); the wolf riders were two steps down in size from him. The wolves are fantastic Tom Meier figures, though.

Incidentally, they're available much more cheaply from Ral Partha Europe (with riders). I'm not sure about the postage costs to the US, but in UK terms, you get six plus riders for £10 from RPE vs six with beast master for £35 from Ral Partha Legacy. So if the postage is less than £25 plus whatever US internal postage is, you might be better served ordering them from the UK.

Just noticed that you can get the wolves without the riders from Ral Partha Europe: £2 for a pair, so £6 for your unit (almost £30 quid cheaper than the US equivalent, which will go a long way in postage).

But again, they are tiny - see the attached photo for a comparison of some WIP Ral Partha wolf riders with Oathmark equivalents.

It's an unpopular opinion, but I don't think the Oathmark plastic wolves are too bad. They are hefty and lightly detailed, but they do look like suitably heavyset and ferocious beasts - with or without riders. I've always liked the visual impact they have on the table; despite being entirely unfinished, that Oathmark rider element has seen a fair bit of action over the past couple of years!

Ral Partha Europe does some bigger, nastier wolves in the Dark Eye range. They cost more than twice as much as the old Ral Partha ones, so I presume they're more than twice the size.

I think I might give these Citadel Fell Wargs a try. Price isn’t terrible for six. IIRC, the GW Middle Earth line is ~25mm? I dunno how these would scale to the oathmark models but they might work out as a unit of lesser warbeast or maybe even have some oathmark goblin wolf riders on em?

These Wild Wargs as well from GW? Even cheaper.

Those are certainly a good size, and the GW riders for them are about the size of Oathmark goblins. You could get the original riders and use Oathmark heads on them without any problems.

They also have the advantage over the original GW wargs of at least looking somewhat like wolves!
