Glenning's ECW adventures
« on: 31 October 2024, 07:04:27 PM »
I did it, I finally did it. "The 17th century isn't my cup of tea", "I'm never getting into ECW or TYW" I used to say... Well, here I am.

You know the feeling, you just casually pick up a bunch of second hand ECW Perry Scots in a small trade group on FB, for a bargain - and suddenly you're hooked - you convert some of them, order some more (and more) speedpaint two warbands in two weeks and then you start working (and converting) on two more. Well, that's how it was for me, at least.  ;)

Jokes aside - I'm hooked. I've finished two warbands - one English and one Scottish - so far, and we've played a couple of games using tweaked Ravenfeast rules so far, and it's been a blast! Let's start with two group shots of the "speedpainted in two weeks" warbands so far. I decided to paint the English all in red and the Scots in grey with light blue bonnets. The rule of cool might be the theme here, but it looks good on the table and helps distinguish beetween the two. When we get the Irish (yes, I',m working on some of those too) and brigands(read: moss troopers) in the mix as well it will work even better.

We have a pretty basic setup when we play our skirmish-sized campaigns:

1 Leader
1 Second in command
2 Sergeants
6 Pikemen w/ "shortened pikes" - works better for skirmish sized games
6 Musketeers
+special units you can "buy" using more points and/or Coins (Dismounted Dragoons so far for the English, I'm working on some Lancers for the Scots, atm). Anyway, on to some quick "army" shots - detailed ones will follow!

Minis are Perry, with some minor conversions (Like the Scot commander with an eyepatch and his lochaber-wielding sergeants) with some bits from our estemeemed Captain Blood thrown in the mix!

Aaaand some shots from our first game. Fun as hell and the rules (tweaked Ravenfeast ones with some rules from En garde! thrown in the mix) worked like a charm:

Congratulations on these two bands that you painted! Can you tell me about the modifications that you made to the "Ravenfeast" rule, except I imagine the firearms? Thank you.

Cheers! And of course, drop me a line in PM and I'll send over all the stats etc.
You can find the core rules here: http://www.ravenfeast.com/free-downloads.html

Glenning, very nice. If you plan to build up your forces you might want to buy the recently released "Never Mind the Matchlocks" rules which come with the latest Wargames Illustrated magazine. They are aimed I think at a bigger game than Ravenfeast needing circa 150 figures per side albeit the author does say you can use less. As I only picked them up yesterday I can't say much more about them but at £5.99 for the magazine/ruleset probably worth getting.
