Glenning's ACW adventures (HUGE update on pg. 2 and 3!)

Alright, I've been working on a new project for the last 6 months or slow, and being a true hobbyist with what seems like a hundred projects going on at the same time - it's slooowly getting there.

I've finished a small unit of USCT troops - using Perry Miniatures plastic bodies from their ACW union kit with heads from the Zulu and Sudanese kits.

Anyway, I've also finished a bunch of Confederate infantry and officers, some Union cavalry and I'm currently working on artillery (for both sides), Confederate cavalry (mostly converted figures), Guerillas as well as some regular Union infantry and dismounted CSA cavalry in civilian clothing PLUS a lot of scenery - so stay tuned for more.

Perry Confederate infantry and command - all plastic. Some subtle conversions here and there - mainly headswaps and some GS facial hair here and there to avoid any clones. I also added two bearded heads from Perry's Afghan kit. The officer's mitella is from the British Sudan kit, and the drummer boy's head is from the British Zulu kit. Flags are GMB.

Very impressive work but I have to confess my ignorance with regard to the mitella. I could only assume it was a reference to the pistol but as the term was new to me I was far from confident about this. On looking the word up I found it is a plant genus, apparently so named from the flower's resemblance to a bishop's mitre. Looking at the figure again to see if I had failed to notice that he was wearing a mitre cap, this theory was swiftly quashed. This led me in my increasing perplexity to wonder whether some sort of paste or dip may have been manufactured from the plant that might be carried by Victorian officers with a sweet tooth but I see no sign of such an item on the figure in question, who seems to be engaged in combat rather than enjoying a delicious if presumably over-sweet snack.

I then decided to let the matter rest until a clarification was forthcoming. As after several days this had failed to appear, and the question had not even been raised, it seemed that the fault lay, as  invariably appears to be the case, in my own ignorance. I consequently decided that my mental health required me to engage in further research, in the course of which I at length discovered a weapon called a Millita that was apparently an air pistol, though I have no knowledge regarding its production,  issue, or use. Could this, I wondered, conceivably be the firearm carried by the Confederate officer? The evidence was slight but the hypothesis, at any rate, appeared rather sounder than my earlier prognostications, which had led only to greater confusion and near-despair. If you would be kind enough to put me out of my misery I would be deeply grateful.

I take it you're referring to the support for the wounded arm? I confess I started looking frantically for a somewhat obsolete missile weapon until the penny dropped. In either event, on this occasion Google was not my friend. Thank you for the clarification.

Love the conversion work on the USCT Troops. Might have to steal that idea with useing Zule heads. The Union Cav and Confederate Infantry also look grand.

These are the best work ups of the Perry ACW plastics I've ever seen.   And, amongst the best paint jobs I've ever seen for any ACW figures.  The Confederates, in particular, have varied but very subtle colors.  More in keeping with men from the same unit whose clothes are worn and faded, not completely different colors.

Thanks a lot - really appreciate it! I tried to emulate the overall feeling of Don Troianis paitings, as I do when I paint my AWI finis, to get that cohesive yet rag-tag feel. I've finished 10 more metal ones as well as an officer and 13 dismounted cavalry - hopefully I'll get some shots up tonight!

What rules are you planning on using them with?

We're playing tweaked Ravenfeast rules with home made scenarios with some add on-rules from Rebel and Patriots. It has worked like a charm during our skirmish ECW and AWI games so I'm looking forward to testing the rules when we're playing a campaign in May.

I've also finished some scenery - the buildings are from Great Escape Games with some mods here and there  - I've added a couple of chimneys to the brown buildings since I took the photos. The chicken coop is scratchbuilt - using parts from the aforementioned GEG sets as well as a fence from Renedra and some good old balsa wood and ice cream sticks.
