1984: after the bomb. (Updated 16/08)
« on: November 17, 2024, 07:03:06 AM »
A discussion with a mate about Threads on the way to the Warfare show yesterday led to us buying some BAOR figs from Empress and some survivor types from Athena Miniatures. We're looking to do some mid-1980s skirmishes in the nuclear winter. The Athena models are pretty good, but can anyone else suggest some suitable 28mm "civvies"?

PS, I already have the famous Traffic Warden from Crooked Dice.

Bit mixed because some are clearly in summer/tropical kit while others are in warm clothing but Crusader does a useful range of post apocalyptic survivors.

You can also find useful figures in the Kiss Kiss Bang Bang range from Copplestone and Artizan, mostly armed minion types.

For unarmed civvies, ie bystanders, I tend to use 1/50 plastic railway figures. Preiser did the originals IIRC but there are dozens of copies out there and you can often buy dozens for next to nix on Etsy, Alibaba and the like. I'm staring at a model bus shelter I just made and it's currently populated with a young bloke in an anorak, a woman in a trenchcoat and old old geezer with cloth cap. All 1/50 plastics.

For armed civilians you have the not Auf Weidersen Pet range from Empress, the Honey Badgers from Under Fire and [drum roll] Crooked Dice.
Unarmed, Empress AWP and you guessed it Crooked Dice.

The Post-Apocalypse range from Crooked Dice has a traffic warden with an SLR and a bandaged face.

Is that a separate head on the armed gutter guard?

No, they are all one piece figures.
The other three are repurposed "Temporal Travellers".

What about these?  http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/64/16550-211124235743.jpeg

Scroll down to the Auf Wiedersehen figures.  Armed and unarmed versions, all wearing coats.

By the by the Wargames Atlantic plastic Partizans are worth looking at. The dress for most is generic enough to see out another few decades of use and they have the sort of weapons that would be in War Reserve stockplies in the 1980s. If you fancy more modern kit, then the WG/ ex Wargames factory Survivors and some of the Rubicon kits wil give you potential options.

IIRC CapnJim (above) did just that with some of the WA partizans.

Indeed I did.  I now have several figures that started life as a WA partisan.  Oly now, they are armed with various Warlord modern (ish, in some cases) weapons (M16s, AKs, Benelli shotguns, Uzis, Galils, etc.)..

You can look in my modern thread to see them...
