Flatpack - Indian Mutiny (Mad dogs and Englishmen)
« on: November 17, 2024, 07:16:16 AM »
Yesterday we played an Indian Mutiny game in my shed.
Young Sam ran the game successfully, using the mad dogs and Englishmen rules.
First time we had played the rules, but Sam said he had played them before buying a set.

The scenario saw mutineers retiring after the siege of Lucknow, being harassed by British forces.
The mutineers had taken up a defensive position at the river crossing, but the British forces were determined to give them a bloody nose.

The battlefield.

The mutineers take up their defensive positions.

The British enter the battlefield.

The British approach the river crossing in a bullish mood.

The British cavalry fly over the bridge and head straight into the mutineers.

Now you see them…

Now you don’t….

In that one move, with a good dice roll, the British cavalry were cut to pieces.
Over half the unit were killed, and the other half routed.
So much for the British cavalry  lol

It was going a little better on the British left flank with Gurkhas and a Naval unit really laying into the mutineers.

Typical sailors…getting their feet wet.

At this point, the mutineers started to lose a little heart, and started withdrawing towards the town.

The British infantry waded across the river too, and waded into the mutineers.

With the mutineers on the run, we called it a day, but it was a bloody encounter.

Thanks again to Sam for running the game.
Thanks to Has.been for being a willing mutineer.
Thanks to J.C for getting those British sailors into combat.
Good game, as always played in the right spirit.

That looked awesome ! Why did the mutineers lose heart? They seemed to be winning and as far as I could see hadn't suffered any casualties. Was it some kind of morale mechanic in the rules?
Or just prudence (squeaky bum time) on the part of the Mutineer player  lol
It looks like this game could continue at some future date, I think the British might have suffered if it had got into the built up area of the town.  That charge of the Gentleman Cavalry! What fun  lol
Well done DonkeyMilkMan for his first outing as umpire with old grognards 3 and 4 times his age! Respect  ;)
I am going to build a wargames army, a big beautiful wargames army, and Mexico is going to pay for it.

2019 Painting Challenge :

figures painted: 57
9 vehicles painted

Cheers James, JC (playing the Brits) was just too damn lucky.
I have nothing important to say so just keep on scrolling.

Here's my photos from the game. Thank you Bob for the food and hosting.

Thank you everyone for playing and keeping distracted by random chit chat as I double checked stuff in the rules.

Also a thanks to Has.Been from the lift to and from the station.

The British line up on the edge of the Jungle, preparing their assault.

The British begin to follow the road towards the town, just on the verge of the bridge.

An overview of the Mutineers defensive position.

The Mutineers, taking defensive postions upon the farm walls, start to feel the heat from the British early artillery barrages.

The Mutineers start to break there line as the British sailors and Simoor Battalion of Gurkhas start to fire and ford the river.

The British start to pull up all their artillery to the riverside, preparing to blow the mutineers to smithereens. Meanwhile the sailors do hard work with covering the british assault.

Mutineers taking a beating from the artillery and British bluecaps.

The British following the road.

Bluecaps on the river bank.

At this point the game stalled for some lovely food, thank you Bob, and some chat. Thank you all for the invite and for a good game.

Here's a couple of fun photos and some of the town.

Has.Beens lovely rocket troops.

Overview of the town, lovely scenery by Flatpack.

Overview of the compund.

Some of the very nicely painted sailor figures by Flatpack. Many debate was taken over whether the sailor with the monkey counted as two casualties or one lol . A lovely figure by Mutineer miniatures.

Some pictures from my (Freedom fighter) side of the table.

My Sepoys holding the defense line (field walls) the Boss holding the
reserve as a second line, and the Riff-Raff safe in the town well away
from those pesky British. :D

Things started to go wrong with the arrival of the British.
A massive number of cannons helped, dragged by even more
massive elephants. They were repurposed from my Ancients
stock of figures. Selucids if memory serves.

The high spot was a disastrous British cavalry charge that matched,
if predated the Light Brigade. :D

However cracks soon began to appear. My frontline troops started to
gather terror (?) points (the green disks behind them).
I tried, honest I did, to reduce them. Command points were allocated
to that purpose on two moves. Throwing an average total on two D6
I should have completely removed the seven discs of the Devil.
The lads will tell you of my innate ability to throw ones, which I did...twice! :o

8427 = The Rocket crew. Waste of space! lol
8431 = Here come the Bully Boys in Blue Caps.
8437/33/34 = Dreaded British Artillery
8435 = The afore mentioned Cavalry charge.
8436 = Blue Caps preparing to cross the river.
8437 = Sailors showing how to cross a river (you get wet!)

Praise to:- Bob, always a genial host. As well as the usual food & drinks he even
did his back in clearing furniture (temporarily stored in the 'Shed')
:- To all for playing in the best spirit
:- Mostly to Sam (Our very own DonkeyMilkMan) Who not only ran the whole
show single handed, but still found time to contribute to the 'Banter' , Give
us lots of History AND (despite being an impoverished student) brought drinks!
Not just any drinks, but Historically interesting Bass Premium Pale Ale.
                 First ever trademarked product.
Huge exports to India (before during & after the mutiny)
And (apparently) delicious. I didn't partake as I was driving.  :?

A very nice day. Well done everyone.

I think a few more pictures of the town have now been added, as you requested.
The compound was scratch built by has.been about 25yrs ago for an invasion of Lebanon ‘82 game.
It consists of three resin buildings with walls and gates added.
He kindly made four of them for me.
