Highlands Miniatures orcs - sort of a review!
« on: 23 December 2024, 12:12:08 PM »
Hi all,

I posted some of my orcs in my usual thread, but wanted to write a bit about them here since I took some photos today! Resin prints aren't usually my thing, but I'm warming to them for the sheer amount of options out there.

I bought a few sets of Highlands Miniatures orcs a few months ago. After some terrible first attempts at painting, I almost gave up, but after settling on a scheme I like, they've grown on me.

They're a good modern take on GW orcs. More upright, faces and models overall are more rounded. Obviously if you don't like hulking GW style orcs, they won't be for you. However, since many have their ears hidden and are so large, I think they'd make brilliant ogres, especially alongside smaller historical or older 25mm humans.

Some pics of them next to some older models. Note these are on 30mm rounds. Ordered unseen, I had planned on using 25mm squares which would never work, then 25mm which was pushing it!

Some comparison shots with older models. The orc spearman was bought poorly assembled, so has been a test scheme model! The skaven I'm happy with, must finish more.

Thank you Dubbya, most interesting. I’m currently re doing my AHQ stuff and I need a source for orcs (haven’t liked much since old proper citadels and maybe Rackhams take) - I quite like these.

Those look great. They also look like they will be suitably nasty in a tabletop battle.

I think they look miles better than the GW counterparts...but then I find Highland to do Warhammer far better than GW, lol.

So the highlands miniatures are often sold with an optional 28mm or 32mm scaling. Do you know if these orcs are 28 or 32mm scale?

I have purchased both of the scales, and in the case of the Bretonnians the 32mm scale works pretty well, but for the Tomb Kings, the 32mm scale is just too big to fit well with the older GW stuff.

Elbows - they certainly do! Warhammer better than GW, I hope they get to all armies! They're almost there with Skaven soon.

Neldoreth - good point. The seller I got them from says 28mm, but their site is so full of errors I'm not convinced. If I were to order again, I'd try finding out (and use these as big-uns!)

I was just looking over my Highland orcs and comparing them to GW. The  Highland orcs in the photo appear to be a larger scale than the GW plastics.

Hi! As in, my orcs seem bigger than yours?

If so, shame. I'd have loved an army of these if just a little smaller. Hard to change now, but I'm thinking I'll finish these up and order some more from the same seller including characters, and have these as a separate elite part of the army.

I might not have made myself clear. I should have said the Highland orc looked like it was 32mm. The Highland figs I have are about the same height as the GW plastics.

No matter if your Orcs are 28mm or 32mm,
they look great. Well done.

I find that if I print these at 95% they fit perfectly with the older GW orcs.

@MadBob - would you mind posting a comparison photo with the 95% scale guys if you get the chance? Ever since ordering the Longsnout Orcs I've been into more old-school ones to bulk out my opposition forces in various games.

Yep, if I were to start again I would do the same, probably smaller.
