Because it is mathematics, not mathsematics, and math is but a shortened version of mathematics.  Therefore, the proper questions is why in the world is 'maths' used instead of the proper math - where did you get that extra 's'!?  And it is not mathematics equations but mathematic equations, so yes, we study mathematics in the plural but mathematic is just as proper in usage where appropriate.      Now if you want to discuss differential equations (not differentials equations) - go ask someone other than me, that was mathematically (not mathsematically) too far for me!

Two nations divided by a common language. Actually it's more than that. Australians abbreviate mathematics as maths, as do the Kiwis, the Irish and probably Sith Ifricans but frankly who knows what Sith Ifricans are saying.

Well technically speaking the Kiwis say 'muths' but it's still plural.
