Completely Out of my Comfort Zone

Anyone familiar with my painting in years gone by may possibly remember that I really only paint historical figures. Ancients, Dark Ages, Napoleonics, WW2. I have occasionally done a warrior for an RPG but really these were Dark Age Viking types or Romans.

As I get back into painting after a long absence a friend asked if I would paint this for him. He had printed it as an experiment but wanted some colour. He informed me that it had to be bright red.

It is for use in a game this week so it has been a bit of a rush job but as it was so different from my usual I thought that I would show it on the Forum. Personally I would have preferred to put some more layers of highlights in the skin so as to emphasise a real "demonic" appearance but time pressures have prevented this.

Any constructive comments would be appreciated.

Perfectly serviceable, at the very least. A nice combination of color tones that works quite well for the intended effect, IMHO.

All I can say is that it looks bloody good, one thing I've learned as I get older is that sometimes less is more, and sometimes less is indeed less 

But this is definitely more

Extra highlights on the red.  Mix in some orange or bright yellow.  (Fantasy stuff needs more highlighting than historicals so they pop.    )

I fully agree. I did do so but I think that the orange/ red mix was not pronounced enough for the dramatic effect that I planned, that and the slightly rushed photo. However the owner is delighted with it so until he gets bored I cannot add any further.

Doncha just hate it when a client won’t let the artist do what’s needed!  There is a reason why Victorians held up amateur artists as greater than professionals, who must pander to those with lesser visions.  At least you weren’t having to match the colour of his sofa!

That is a scary thought. I know his sofa and will now have visions of a beige demon to haunt me for weeks! Time to get back to Napoleonics...
