« on: 06 March 2025, 02:07:16 AM »

A friend of mine just completed this delightful map of Germany in the period of the Thirty Years War. It is a labor of love and beautiful to look at. A downloadable copy is on my blog at : https://antonswargame.blogspot.com/2025/03/gallocelts-map-of-germany-during-thirty.html

If you have questions, comments or congratulation Gallocelt can be contacted at gallocelt@yahoo.com

That is beautiful! I could spend a couple hours poring over that, looking at how places relate to each other.

With the clearly delineated terrain it is easy understand the marching routes of the armies, and the importance of the cities that controlled the major river-crossings

It is indeed a very nice map, all the more I hate my nagging ... but the mountain range southwest of Magdeburg is called "Harz" ... not "Herz" ... sorry, sorry, sorry ...

Greetings all,

I have just joined Lead Adventure forum and wanted to let you know that my plan is to make an update to my 17th century map
of Germany.  I would like to thank those who are interested in this project, who have made comments, and I'd especially like to thank
Anton for all his support and for recommending that the product be offered here at Lead Adventure and at his blog.

I've been reading the comments on both Anton's blog and at this forum, and I've determined that  I need to make some minor changes.
Over at Anton's, someone suggested that there was a road in Denmark that connected to Altona near Hamburg.  So far, I have been
unable to find this road on any period map.  On the other hand,  the small town of Altona near Hamburg was certainly present.  It is
a historically significant town because of the Danish domination of the Hamburg area.  Also, I think that some mention must be made
of the Dutchy of Holstein.  I believe I could do a bit more research and find the border but I hesitate to do that since Holstein was still
nominally part of the Holy Roman Empire, although under Danish control.  I might simply put an unbordered Dutchy of Hamburg on the
map.  Next, there's the Harz mountains that I spelled Herz.  My bad, that's got to change.  Also, the town of Breisach. had a special
strategic value,  was fortified and had an important bridge over the Rhine.  I'm going to need to put that on there, including a road.

These changes should take me about a week or so to complete.  The updated map will be posed here and substituted for the older issue.
Hopefully none have printed the original map.  The newer map will have a different file name and I would strongly encourage people to
delete the old map to avoid confusion.

Cheers!

Gallo

I like the map and respect the efforts and work that went into it. However, it is a bit odd that most places are named in German but others not ( English instead) and some Umlaute in names are present but missing in others.
There are funny mixes too - Swabian would be correct English, I guess - Schw?bisch would be German, but I read Schwabian.

For more historical in the southwest. Freiburg and Colmar much more important and bigger than Offenburg. The road Stra?burg to Lake Constance was the main road trough the Black forest. Stra?burg-Offenburg-Kinzigtal(valley)-Schramberg-Rottweil. Lindau was altough important at the Lake Constance.

There will be an update to the 17th century German campaign map coming very soon.  As usual, if you download the new version it would be best to delete the older one to avoid confusion.  Anton has kindly offered to upload the new map to his previous post.  Thanks to all for your interest and support.

Cheers!
