A Look at Historic Lisbon, Part 1.

Last week I had the pleasure of spending several days visiting the Portuguese cities of Lisbon and Oporto, both of which I had missed on a previous trip to the Iberian peninsula back in 2019 exploring Peninsular War battle sites.



In this first post covering the trip, I have taken a look at some of the historically significant landmarks to be seen in Lisbon, from the water and on land.

This is one of the best parts of historical wargaming, in that you can combine the hobby with many other enjoyable pursuits, reading, painting and of course travel.

JJ, very nice review. A few years ago my mates and our wives went from Porto to Lisbon via several battlefields. Probably our highlight was staying at Fort de la Concepcion, a Spanish fort captured by the British and now a hotel. We met Charles Esdaile the well known author on Napoleonic Spain who was escorting a British army group. My Australian mate decided to argue tactics with him despite having no knowledge of Napoleonic warfare.

Thank you, much appreciated, and Carolyn and I stayed at the Fort Concepcion Hotel on our 2019 expedition which was a very memorable part of that trip.

I'm smiling broadly at the thought of your pal bandying Napoleonic tactics with Prof Esdaile whose Peninsular War History is a valued tome in my own library.

Ahhh - brings back memories.  My wife and I went to Portugal and Spain in 2022.  We went to many of the same places you did in Lisbon and Porto.  Also went to Tomar, and toured the Convent of Christ (the former seat of the Knights Templar) in Portugal.  Thanks for posting...

Glad you enjoyed the post.

The historically interested tourist is well catered for in the Iberian Peninsula and can enjoy their pastime amid glorious country and town vistas, whilst topping up the vitamin D and getting in plenty of walking to burn off the calories inflicted by such delights as pastel de nata, which were a regular breakfast accompaniment during our stay in Lisbon and Porto.
