Cheers Iain, any recommendations for books on the early flemish settlers looking pre WoI?

Nothing that specific I'm afraid, but you may wish to pick up a copy of "Domination and Lordship 1070- 1230" by Richard Oram. Part of the New Edinburgh History of Scotland series, it covers the period of the Davidian Revolution and the import of the various European knights. I've not got that volume myself (I've got the next volume, covering the wars of 1214-1371) but they are excellent works. Not "popular history", quite dry and scholarly. However given the depth of research you've been doing so far on this project, I doubt that'll be an issue for you!
Proudly not painting Wars of The Roses since... ever

Small update. No Knights today but a unit of good old fashioned "they dont like it up em" spearmen.

8 men with various gear all with gambesons. Still need to ink them and highlight them but bases is done and ran out of ink.

Not sure which livery to do the 2 small kite shields in the unit. I think either Douglas or Biggar colours as the 2 leaders of my retinue.

Many hundreds of pounds will have been spent on grass tufts by the end of this project

Iain your scots project gave me everything for this! The movement trays i loved! And for Barons war the open uneven form is fine. The miniatures are great too, not as good as your painting but I can't match ur skills. ... yet! Hahahah lol

Lovely work, I'm currently painting some of these as well, they are just superb figures
I cannot pretend to feel impartial about colours. I rejoice with the brilliant ones and am genuinely sorry for the poor browns. - Winston Churchill

First unit of spearmen now complete. Very happy with them. Chose to do them as Douglas men. We will see what the next unit brings.

Terrain Time.
While I wait for a few claymore castings models to arrive to finish off my second unit of spearmen i thought i would go back to working on my Norman Priory. Finished off the "welfare" building. Where the brothers can kick back and unwind with spot of light copying. Or take a delicious meal of bread and hard cheese washed down with clean spring water. Definatly better than some of the "hotels" i have stayed in for work.

I still have the main church building to do. And a small mausaleum, i may or may not finish then its on to woods and fields and the board is complete.
