Haven't tried the 2025 edition but often played the previous ones.
The gridded system doesn't take long to get used to.
We used to use the rules at a school club, helped eliminate any bickering over line of sight, measuring ranges etc.
If a square has any terrain in it then troops are in cover. Interestingly it takes more effort to move out of cover than it takes to move in (troops are reluctant to give up a good position).
The grids we used were not intrusive - just small crosses marked on the cloth to show where the corners of each square were. Some people hardly noticed we were using grids.
There used to be a free basic downloadable set to try out the basics of the rules (not sure if there still is)
