Saga Age of Chivalry/Crusades - My journey log
« on: April 01, 2025, 03:31:34 PM »
Last year I joined local group of Saga players and greatly enjoyed my return to the game. My original collection was built during first edition when the Viking Age was all there was. Now in its second edition, Saga offers multiple "Universes" to cover historical era. Most recently, the authors released the Age of Chivalry so I have been sketching out a collection for the medieval era. In this post I will chronicle my progress through this project.

My goal is to build viable 6-8 point forces for representative factions spanning the early to late medieval period covered in the Age of Chivalry and Age of Crusades source books. I also want to capture distinct visual and play styles while staying within the Nordic European zone. To this end, I have settled on three time periods with three factions each as follows:

Baltic Crusades
This covers the pushes into Eastern Europe and the Baltics in the 11th to 13th century. Knights wear mostly chainmail with flowing tunics, while horses carry caparisons. The primary effort will be a very colourful generic force, based on Wargames Atlantic and Victrix kits, which can be played as Polish, Baltic Crusaders or any other European faction from the Age of Crusades. Added to this for some unique flavour is a force of Teutonic Knights (Ordenstaat) and Mongols, both based on Fireforge kits.

The central conflict covering in Age of Chivalry during the late 14th and early 15th century. The goal is a warband for the English, Scots and French, with the later being suitable for the other francophone factions (Bretons, Burgundy). This gives me a shooting, a pike, and a heavy cavalry force. All based on Perry plastic kits with early armour and wide mix of uniforms.

Italian Wars
The conflicts during the late 15th and early 16th century. Slightly out of the timezone for Age of Chivalry and bordering on the Renaissance, this gives me an opportunity to use the later era Perry kits. Units will be somewhat more uniform in appearance which might be anachronistic but will make them distinct from the Hundred Years War era. My choice of warbands are Condottieri of the Papal States, Swiss and Germans for the same shooting/pike/heavy cavalry spread.

War of the Roses
I also added a small force for the War of the Roses just because...

Below is the full breakdown of each warband which I will mark off when completed as usual in my logs. Very unlike my usual modus operandi, I will paint these in fairly random order as the fancy strikes me!

Ambitious project! I look forward to seeing how you get on- do you know what miniatures you'll be using to represent these lists or are you planning to keep things more loose?

So far in this project I have been mostly assembling, priming and basing everything. A few straggling orders aside, everything is now ready for painting. In the last couple of weeks I have painted a few units shown below.

English: 24 Archers with stakes and 12 Billmen

French: 12 Crossbowmen and 12 Serjeants

German: 12 Mounted Men-at-Arms (6 with Barding), a Mounted Warlord, and a Cannon

Condottieri: 6 Mounted Men-at-Arms of the Papal Guard with Barding

I am waiting for a few banners to finish a few units which I will post once arrived.

I don't do "loose" :). The figures are all bought, assembled, and ready for painting with the exception of a few character figures in transit. The Age of Chivalry forces are all Perry plastics with Perry metal characters/specialists. The exception are some named characters from Medbury, Avantine and Bad Squiddo. The Age of Crusade forces are from Fireforge (Mongols, Ordenstaat), Wargames Atlantic (Polish foot), and Victrix (Polish knights).

Helge, another cracking project. How about combining it with yer Waterloo British Infantry?
Once read, how effective it'd have been, if each square had a unit of English Longbowmen in it. They could rain arrows down on the Frenchie Horse, from behind a redcoated stake wall!

Steady progress in the last couple of weeks:

My Germans got some more Warlord options, foot Men-at-Arms, Warriors, and Crossbowmen. I kept to the yellow/black colours with pastels for accents.

Thank you all for the kind words. From yellow/black for the Germans, I am shifting to yellow/red for the Papal States Condottieri. Here is a unit of men-at-arms on foot.

Gorgeous work! Quite tempted to get me some more foot men-at-arms just because they are so quick and fun to paint.
