Cheers Rick.

No, no commandos, somehow they feel like cheating.

Oh? Because they are a bit more competent?
Well they do seem to use individual accuracy rather than a mass volley of shooting! Shame though - I do like them droid commando's.  :)

Essentially, yes. I always picture the droid army as faceless, relentless masses of troops, absorbing fire by sheer weight of numbers. Yes, some are heavier but they all just grind forwards as one.
Sneaky commando droids just feel out of place in my own private head-canon.

They do look cool though....

Right then. Bear with me.

The idea was to have some generic armoured troops that could serve as either Clones or Stormtroopers depending on what era of SW I felt like playing in.

The Wargames Atlantic Eisenkern fit the bill for me. I've used the male and female troopers and mixed some bits in from other ranges for some of the specialists.

Going back to the Separitist battle droid's for a moment - it's interesting that the Clone War wasn't the end of the battle droids: ST super tactical droids and T series tactical droids sometimes refused the shutdown order, sometimes not relaying it, thinking it was a Republican trick so there might be pockets of battle droids still working in odd corners of the galaxy - oddly enough a few T or ST models ended up working with the rebellion. Of the ones that did shut down, some B1's and B2's were reprogrammed as labour droids and the Empire used huge numbers of B2's as training/target droids for Stormtrooper training. Dwarf Spider droids were used (especially in the rim) in Stormtrooper units as fire support droids, whilst Octuparra droids carried on being built by the Ubese for themselves and the E4 Baron droids carried on being built for sale as security/police droids. The Colicoid droideka's and annihilator droids carried on being built on Colla IV but, as can be seen in The Book of Boba Fett, the Pike Syndicate appears to have got their hands on some annhiliator droids (at least). Commando droids mostly shut down and were got rid of after the Clone War until Darth Vader, in need of an instant army, took over a factory to produce them - several ended up in various parts of the galaxy. So it wouldn't be out of place to have some seperatist droids mixed in with Imperials, Imperial Remnants or Rebels in the later eras.

Also there must be local governments who took over, reactivated and kept them.

we see this on The Bad Batch season 2, on the world of Desix. the local governor reactivated the seperatist droids after the shutdown order, since the world was a member of the confederacy. the droids were used to oppose takeover by the Empire, though unsuccessfully.

we also see it happen after the empire on Plazir-15 in The Mandolorian, where a locals used reprogrammed battledroids as a labor force.

we've also seen single or small numbers of battledroids reprogrammed by private individuals, usually for use as bodyguards.

It was also an episode of Rebels as well - the one where they got hold of a Sheathipede as a replacement shuttle and, as I mentioned, the final episode of The Book of Boba Fett. I got quite a lot of information out of the New Essential Guide to Droids as well, and the Wookiepedia entries for the Tactical and Commando droids.
There does seem to be a lot of reprogramming of Battle Droids going on in the wider galaxy!

I am not that big expert of SW lore, but yes, exactly, it is hard to imagine that in a fragmented and violent yet technically advanced world like Star Wars no one utilized those widespread battle droid designs which were basically just left where they got the switchoff message. Especially that maybe some of those 6 million cultures C3PO speaks the language of, some might be physically or even culturally unfit for raising an army among themselves.
In these cases I would give them new paintjobs, or at least some distinctive new markings over their original separatist livery though. Or heavy weathering in case the new owner is not the caring type.
