A desert-themed campaign, "Into the Red Desert"
« on: May 10, 2025, 02:26:41 PM »
Into the Red Desert

I've been using photos of my figures to publish Pathfinder 2e adventures, and the next project is a desert-themed Arabian Nights / Orientalist Cults adventure.

This first batch was painted about a year back, from the "Temple of Set" collection, sculpted by Tim Prow for Joe Corsaro at Dragon Bait Miniatures https://www.dragon-bait-minis.com/

The last two weeks has seen a flurry of painting, first with a set of Berber-Tuareg camel riders from the Blaze Away line at Lancashire Games https://www.lancashiregames.com/lg/28mm-berbers-/-tuaregs.html

Somehow, I have to get this guy into the story, he's such a fun figure.

From a group I purchased in 2020 from Bear's Head Miniatures. I don't know if Philip Hynes is still in business, or even in the hobby. Looks like his last post here was some 4 years back.

These are looking great! I think you need to play the Lion King theme when you introduce that last character onto the table...  :D lol

He's definitely got the Lion King vibe rolling there, Mike.

Next batch are the Berber-Tuareg foot figures from the Blaze Away line at Lancashire Games. The first one makes me think of Doonesbury's Red Rascal, for some reason.

This guy was holding a rifle, IIRC, so I devolved it into an axe.

For the Conan Vibe, you can't beat Khal the Barbarian from Bear's Head Miniatures, created by Philip Hynes. I'm pretty sure I spotted his work first on this very forum.
Is Bear's Head Miniatures still in business?
IIRC the subsequent figures are also from Bear's Head.

This enchanter figure is very old, I believe it's from the late 70s, and I've no idea what manufacturer. I found it in a remnant of my lead pile from back then and decided it would fit in with the Red Desert project.
It's also smaller than most figures these days (IIRC we call em "true 25s") so I put some extra thickness on the base. Worked like a charm!

Here is another very old figure, I'm pretty sure it's one of Tom Loback's Dragontooth orcs (with a different sword from the lead pile).
The otherr three orcs are also very old, and I'm not sure which line they're from.

Work continues on some adversaries: Frostgrave Gnolls from Badger Games.
(Somehow, the paint looked better before I enlarged everything! Oh, well.)

There’s nothing wrong with the painting on those, they look pretty good in my opinion! Gnolls seem like an excellent choice for desert themed opponents, too, since hyenas tend to live in desert, savanna, etc.

Very nice work all around.  To answer your question about Bears Head, he has closed up shop and sold off his molds.  Crooked and Bad Squiddo got some.  I think some of others went to the states.  I still have not seen who is producing the "not" Conan or the orangutan.
