What to do with Star Trek Away Missions minis?
« on: May 26, 2025, 11:12:11 PM »
I bought all the Star Trek Away Missions boxes. The game doesn’t do much for me, too “board gamey”?

But I like the goofy over-large head minis quite a bit.

What other Star Trek themed rules are people using for their big-head away missions?

People do seem to like the FFOL Galactic Heroes as a generic rules set - I was hoping to find a paper copy this side of the pond but only the pdf seems to be available here; it only seems available in the states and the postage is more than the cost of the rulebook.
Xenos Rampant is a contender only if each figure is a unit, otherwise you'd need large numbers of them.
5 Parsecs from Home seems to have a rather different feel to it, so not great if you still want a Trek vibe to a game.
Other than that there's a bit of a scarcity - you might try the Modiphius 'Red Alert' rules from the rpg but you'd likely need to scrabble around to get stats for the figures.

5 Parsecs might be interesting - but yeah, will take some tweaking.

I just want to roll some dice the same size as those gigantic craniums. They’re like Sputnik on a stick. They’ve got their own weather system!

It's worth checking out printing places like Dox Direct - https://www.doxdirect.com/ I don't know how long the rules are, but if you can live with black and white, it's pretty cheap, and very fast

Five Parsecs has a very Traveller feel (one of its inspirations). Not great for classic Trek, but maybe closer to some of the much grittier frontier stuff of things like Strange New Worlds ???

I created a mash-up of 'Fistful of Lead: Galactic Heroes' with the 'Away Missions' rules.

I'd have to dig it out, but the basic idea was to replace the generic task system from 'Galactic Heroes' with the more defined tasks from 'Away Missions'. This meant each character retained their 'Galactic Heroes' traits, but I also incorporated their 'Away Missions' specializations.

All tasks started at a "hard" difficulty (needing an 8+ to succeed), but relevant specializations would reduce the difficulty by one or two levels. For example, if Geordi needed to access a computer, the task would normally be hard (8+), but since he has the 'Computers' specialization, the difficulty drops to "medium" (5+). If it were an Engineering task instead, his 'Engineering x2' specialisation would drop it further to "easy" (3+).

This approach also lets me reuse the mission cards from 'Away Missions'. At one point, we considered standardising it so that any relevant specialisation would always drop the difficulty by just one level, but we haven't play-tested that yet.

All those suggestions are good. You might also download Space Weirdos from Wargame Vault for $5. I'm using it for my Star Wars games and the players are enjoying it. Some battle reports here:

I was hoping they might've had a POD option somewhere but, if printing out the PDF is the only possibility, then I'll take that. I'm using the old (and a bit clunky, tbh) SW Miniature Battles (I have all 3 original books) at the moment but could do with a change.

I second Fistful of Lead Galactic Heroes.

The other option I would throw in is Star Schlock.  https://www.starschlock.com/

Star Schlock is geared toward the campy sci-fi of the 40's through the 80's.  Definitely Star Trek inspired.
They even have some "not Star Trek" miniatures.  The minis are of great quality, too.

Follow the link and scroll down through the prepainted minis - it's well worth taking a peek; very nice look to the figures, sort of Star Trek/Forbidden Planet by way of Logans Run; which really works by the way!

As far as other rule systems go, you could try Four Colour Studios rules - Blasters and Bulkheads, Void Pirates and Farthest Star. B&B are the original rules (now 2nd edition) and are, basically, a sci-fi version of their Supersystem rules - very customizable (is that even a word?) and works fairly well as Superhero rules (not tried these sci-fi ones yet). VP are a slightly more simplified and streamlined version of B&B, FS are VP but with more of a skirmish rpg element to them; the idea being the players take a group of figures and everything else are npc's. They are quite affordable as pdf's through drivethrurpg or Wargames Vault (I think) so won't break the bank if you decide they're not what you want.
