Pirate Ship aesthetics?

Captain Blood has a couple of beauties of ships for his tiny pirates - which someone made a comment about furled sails.

So, from the preeminent standpoint of maximizing playability, how much should we 'leave out' on our sailing ships?  Put in the masts but no rigging or sailing, or a minimum of rigging, or add sails but keep them furled?

Captain Blood opted for fairly minimal from what I saw.

Sort of the eternal dance between make it look good versus make it playable.

How say you all?


I have a vested interest as I consider changing how I'm using ships in my plans to revitalize my pirate collection - and including a few of the awesome looking 3D printed ships out there.  Already own one and have on order two more 'sunk' ships.

I think the someone was probably me - and yep, I think I miss some impression of 'sails' on a model ship - but, obviously, that's only from an aesthetic point of view.

It was just a comment in passing, while marvelling at the Captain's project in general - I don't think one needs to try and find any kind of consensus regarding it, really.

As you say, for those that game, playability has to be paramount ultimately.

Upper sails and no rigging works for me; that’s what I did on my Gary Chalk ships. I have a fully rigged ship (an old wooden model made by a great uncle) and it looks great but is a pain to use

Just masts with magnets. I add the sails when the ship is on the move or when I have to move minis on the ship.
