Basing 10mm BBB
« on: July 07, 2025, 02:02:56 PM »
Hello all. I wonder if I can ask for help please. I'm thinking of a FPW project and likely to use the Bloody Big Battle rules. I'm thinking 10mm Pendraken. Basing I believe is 25 x 25 and I read 4 figures to a base. Now my understanding of this war was that when fighting took place it was more open order than lines and columns from say the Napoleonic wars. So would you base these figures in a staggered open order or more close order please?.I've just had a look at some other 10mm figs I have and when placing open order on a 25 x 25 square it looks a bit odd. I know it shouldn't really matter but I'm down a bit of a rabbit hole on this. Many thanks. Mark

Hi Mark,

An approach some BBB players use, which might suit your purpose (especially if you're scaling down to 2/3rds as I suggested elsewhere), is:
- don't use one 25x25mm base per base strength of the unit;
- instead, give every infantry unit two larger bases (say between 40x20 and 50x25);
- those two bases let you represent all three possible formations;
- instead of base removal for casualties, use dice or strength counters of some kind to keep track of the unit's strength.

Those larger bases then let you create little dioramas. E.g., you could have one with half a dozen skirmishers, the other with 8 to 12 close-ranked figures and a flag. Etc etc etc.

My suggestion with most basing queries, is to give it a try. See what looks good to you.

If you use blue tack or double sided tape, you can put a few figures on the right sized bases and try some different compositions and densities and see what works for you. And I'd at least do a unit's worth of bases too - just to see how they look when positioned together as they will in a game.

As Chris suggests (and as the author, I'd suggest his words have a good weight on the matter) bigger bases give more options for deploying the figures. AFAIK figure count doesn't matter in BBB so going with what looks right is more important.

What he said. Figure count has no effect at all.

With a glorious swish of his sword and his lance
And a glorious clank of his tin-plated pants. - Dr. Seuss
