Glenning's Ancient adventures (WIP Germans 1/8)
« on: August 01, 2025, 10:17:34 AM »
This is a project I've been wanting to do for a whiiile - and with most of my other projects "finished" it's finally time - so let's start with some good old Germans!

Victrix Ancient Germans (duh) with parts from the early Saxon kit - especially for the Chieftain and "Nobles" - they will also all have cloaks or furs and will be wearing more colourful garb than the "rank-and-file", and all will have Suebian knots or tops knots, to easily distinguish them on the board.

The "rank-and-file" will have a bunch of cloaks, but not all of them - also some more bare chested ones. Most will have Suebian knots or top knots. Same reason as above. 50/50 mix of colourful and neutral garments.

The skirmishers will be mostly shirtless, the odd cloak here and there - most will have their hair "loose", and will be in more neutral colours - because of the aforementioned reasons above.

I'm also going to use parts and bodies from the great Late Roman and Dacian kits to break up the monotony of the original German kit a bit. However, arm swaps goes a long way, and some of the minis seen here has already got that treatment.

Super fun to build, going to do 20 more as well - can't wait to paint these bad boys! I'm going for a colourful vibe - especially for the shields (which will be handpainted in simple patterns) - as seen in the artwork of Peter Dennis in Ospreys "Roman Soldier vs Germanic Warrior" and the reenactor photos seen in Gabriele Espositos "Armies of the Germanic Peoples, 200 BC to AD 500" - and also as an homage to the paint scheme of the old Foundry Germans - which I always wanted, but never got around to get my hands on, in my early teens.

_
My group is currently playing Ravenfest with a lot of house rules so the I will divide my Germanic forces into two small warbands when we're playing "Germans on Germans" scenarios (I will also paint one of the "teams" with a blue palette - the other one in a mostly red palette - so when combined they will look rag tag and colourful but when playing against each other one warband can be the "Red" one and another the "Blue" one to be easily distinguishable from each other on the board.

The Germanic "divided" warband will be as follow:

1x Chieftain (Leader)
1x "second in command" (Hero)

1x Hornblower
1x Standard Bearer

5x "Nobles"

10x Warriors

5x Skirmishers w/ Javelins

So combined they will be a bigger force when facing Romans, Gauls etc.

Looking very jolly. Do remember that metal was expensive, so it was a lucky man who had a sword.
The laws of probability do not apply to my dice in wargames or to my finesses in bridge.

Thanks!  :D

Indeed - most of my "nobles" will have swords, a couple of the rank-and-file and none of the skirmishers. All will have spears, except for the Javelin-throwing skirmishers.
You'll find the odd axes and knives across the board, but not in excess.

They're my most recent army. Thus far, one victory (against Gauls) and one narrow defeat (early Empire).

Looks like a nice project, have fun!

Which house rules did you create for Ravenfeast if I may ask? I am also playing with that ruleset. My gaming group only adapted it with house rules to a Middle Earth setting  :D

Thanks!

We do a lot of house rules depending on the time frame - we've done a lot for WOTR, Sengoku, ECW, AWI and ACW and it works like a charm! You can find my house rules in my other threads!  :D

For this project we're going to basically use the core rules since Germans are pretty close to Norse/Vikings - with some of our own tweaked house rules (including loot) with more options when it comes to coins etc. Also some period fitting special rules, more rules for Romans later on etc. - working on some atm, so stay tuned!

Here's the German stuff rule-wise so far+ or modified core rules (I'm currently working on some "lead from the front" rules for the Chieftain (plus if he's right there in the fray inspiring his warriors, but minus if he's standing behind his own troops etc.), I'm also working on special rules for hornblowers and standard bearers (during our other games they usually boots Morale of nearby troops but suffer -1 in Melee).

Thanks for sharing the extra rules, will take a look at them at the weekend. Perhaps we should open up a Ravenfeast House Rule thread in the medieval section, to discuss additional rules we all made up  ;D

Okay... we're a long way from those wonderful AWI figures you were working on, but you've got me watching!

with a few more figs you'll have enough for a unit  lol

Great looking figs.  I have a bunch of their Gauls - great sculpts with a lot of versatility.
