How much interest would there be in an Ancient Cthulhu range?
« on: 03 January 2010, 04:54:21 AM »
Just curious...

How much interest would there be in a Lovecraftian range set in the Ancient World? Say, third century AD, Roman Empire. Could easily do it earlier, or later.

This is something I've pondered for some time. It sort of links in with my academic research... in a weird sort of way.

But, would this be something that would interest anyone else, or am I stretching a bit?

Yes that would be very neat, because creatures you could always use in modern, 1920s, Victorian, etc, and for investigators etc, it's always nice to have alternate minis around for stuff.

I'd definitely be interested.

It sounds intriguing, but then again... people turning into Deep Ones, dressed in togas or tunics, OK, I can see that... but beyond that, how could we tell if a byakhee or a ghoul was from 2000 years ago or not?

Roman 'investigators' would be cool... also known as 'worried looking Roman civilians carrying scrolls and other paraphenalia' or something like that. But then, I'd be pretty interested in those anyway, even if they weren't specifically for CoC!

More civilians for everything, please! I'm certainly not going to say 'no' if you're thinking about ancient non-combatants along with the monsters.

Sounds like fun!

Monsters can easily apply across the ages as most have a timeless quality, but Roman or Greek investigators and Persian cultists that could be a lot of fun. Or even Mayan worshippers or Egyptian old ones cults

In fact might have to do some research in to that for my next CoC game.

Love the Idea. :-*

Agreed...what would make an unarmed or spear-armed adventurer particularly Lovecraftian? What would make a shoggoth particularly Roman? (No, not a toga.)

However, it might be nice to see some tablets, idols, statues, monoliths, temples etc. That sort of stuff could prove useful in recreating various locations such as the Nameless City, Dark Pharaoh's pyramid, Exham caverns, Sarnath, Dreamlands... As for figures, druid types and mad arabs should be major hits in many settings.

Maybe there's some potential hidden somewhere. What sort of products you had in mind?

Foundry now do Roman civilians and as others have said how different would the monsters be?

Personally I think you should concentrate on the more contemporary stuff

Would that include some civilians for Jerusalem (Judea generally)? All very well having Roman Civilians but we "need" Judean Civilians!!  :) ;D

Think of a good rioting crowd and some Judean investigators.

"No! No! Follow the Gourd!"...

By 'Roman' I really meant, Roman-period and therefore including lots of different dress-styles from the empire (Orc hastily covers his back against accusations of cultural bias...)

Roman investigators? Like Flavius Maximus, Private Roman Eye?

I'm speaking of appropriate investigators, civilians, victims, cultists, and perhaps a monster now and then. The Foundry civilians are pretty minimal, and most of them are dressed incorrectly, unfortunately.

Now it sounds really interesting! No idea if there is a market for that sort of adventure but I would be tempted to play it for sure.

This reminds me that I have a roman vampire from WW to paint. And a bunch of skeletal legionaries from Zvezda to go with it.
