Götterdämmerung! Looking for suggestions...
« on: January 05, 2010, 10:51:58 PM »
Ok. So I've finally decided to jump into the Weird World War fray and start collecting some miniatures. I want to build a heavily themed army, and I am looking for suggestions and recommendations for both miniatures and rules. I want to theme my force around the fall of Berlin in April/May 1945 (in the real world!). I'm aware that many of the alternative WWII rulesets assume that the war is still ongoing, but I'd like to do a force that could 'potentially' be Germanys last stand!

Here's what I want to include:

Volkssturm (the only models I actually have at the moment! I've re-based some Musketeer Miniatures Inter-war militia and want to add some Bolt Action HitlerJugend armed with Panzerfausts).
Waffen SS (foreign voulunteers, eg Danes, Norwegians and French)  as well as some regular Wehrmacht troops (late German) and maybe some Kriegsmarine troops (if onyone does any that is).
Zombies (I was thinking German and Soviet... the Germans need manpower... why not use a few dead 'Ivans'?).
A Panther Tank (or two).
And possibly a big Werewolf, in honour of operation Werwolf (sic). Something to really tear into the invading Russians!

Any suggestions?  ???

I use Victory Force (http://www.victoryforce.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=SFNT&Store_Code=VFM) as my WWII minis and they have a huge collection so give them a once over.  They got Germans with the Vampire IR rigs and that would go good with Berlin '45 and the Resistance minis have armed civis with German weapons and even a flame thrower and MG42 crew.  Those might make good addition to your force.

Pic up a couple 1/48 scale Panther kits from Tamiya and buy some IR conversions or even go all out and get a E100 or Mause from Quarter Kit (http://www.quarter-kit.com/) if you got the cash.

I would suggest my company's German Zeds (http://www.whattheminiatures.com/axis-store.html) or swing over to White Knights most excellent site for others who make those undead Ratzis.

Reaper does some great generic werewolves but if yo need them more WWIIish then check out Grindhouse's (http://www.incursiongame.com/) Nazi werewolf.

I use modified rules from the Battleground WWII system but the Bailey's Secrets of the Third Reich might fit your taste.  All the WWII rules sets are easily modified to get weird so hit the net and check out the huge list of great systems that might find your fancy.

Hope that helped a bit and below is a ink to some of my Weird War gaming (http://whattheminiatures.com/forum/index.php?board=22.0) to get you in the mood.  Also check out Michi's latest Weird War romp with his most excellent female werewolf and all around painting superiority.  (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=14627.0)

Hope that helped and welcome to the madness of Weird WWII,
Brian

Presuming that you are looking for 28mm ...

Volkssturm  - Bolt Action all the way!
Waffen SS - Artizan, Bolt Action
Panther - Waffenkammer!
Zombies - Incursion Zombies are IMO the best, followed Secret Weapons (West Wind)
Werewolf - West Wind

You may want to look up my website for some painted Examples...

http://www.adpublishing.de/html/incursion.html
http://www.adpublishing.de/html/west_wind.html

As far as rules are concerned I am strongly recommending Mongoose Battlefield Evolution World at War together with World at War: Gear Krieg!

For rules, I would HIGHLY recommend Darkson's AE:WW2 game.  Its a great skirmish WWW2 game, with the new expansion book out now, its fantastic!
It got my group into WWW2 again after a hiatus...

For 28mm minis, we do use the westwind figs, but we supplement that with some other companies, like the Thrilling Tales from Artizan ( www.artizandesigns.com/prod.php?prod=1619 and www.artizandesigns.com/prod.php?prod=1613 ) as well as their regular WW2 lines.

We also use figs from Victory Force,

Brigade Games ( www.brigadegames.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Category_Code=BGADVH ),

But we also use the figs from What The... Miniatures ( link in previous post).  Those are great figs!
and some Mechs from AT:43 (repained...) to name a few...
Take a good look at that Frothers link for other manufacturers...

WWW2 is good fun, so have a BLAST!

Thanks for all the helpful replies!

I was originally intending to use the Darkson AE-WWII ruleset as it only requires a few miniatures but I'm having real trouble tracking down a copy of the rulebook here in the UK! If I can manage to get hold of a copy I think I may already have a 'detachment' I can throw together from the Musketeer 'counts as' Volkssturm, and some Bolt Action Waffen SS (I already have their 'Hitlerjugend' on order  :D). I'd just need something to use as a leader... maybe an artizan command squad?

If you can get the main book and the new expansion, you will be pretty set for a good set of rules!

I love the AE:WW2 rules...

I've been thinking this over myself and I haven't started anything yet,but I'm interested in the subject of an alternative WWII.
Just like you I'm not sure what rule set to use.

It's a board game if I'm not mistaken. It looks interesting and is one my list of try outs, but I'm looking more for a skirmish system.

I saw that as well before and again that does interest me.

I'm looking more for a game like Disposable Heroes with zombies, some armored suits, unusual vehicles and normal troops all mixed together in a skirmish format.Any ideas? :)

Cheers

Nope, Incursion is the board game - SotR is the "normal" tabletop game.
