Has anyone used Vallejo Panzer colour series?
« on: January 11, 2010, 05:12:18 AM »
Hi guys,

Has anyone used Vallejo Panzer colour series for their miniatures an if so what are your recommendations?

What I'm trying to define if the colours are unique and provide definition for historical miniatures.

Thank you,

Helen
Best wishes,
Helen

I now use Vallejo Panzer Grey as my highlight of black.  It is just a wee bit lighter than umber, but that wee bit makes a lot of difference.

Some years back, I was given one of the old Panzer Aces paint sets (composed of various rust tones, track primer and translucent light paints), and those are indeed ace. The rust tones in particular are very, very useful, and I usually use the lightest one as a skintone base; they havenīt yet run out, since you can use very little of the thick rust tones with some water to cover very nicely.

All good quality, and I had good experience both with their Panzergrau and Ochre tones, but since my run-in with their Prussian Blue and Sunny Skin I am reluctant to give the VMC range carte blanche when it comes to recommendations.

I like those historical tones very much, but I am not too picky for accuracy - what looks right does the job for me, and those do indeed look right to me.

Has anyone used Vallejo Panzer colour series...

Vallejo Panzer Aces?  I bought sets 3 & 4.  Use them; like them.   :)

Whether or not an individual painter will "like" them depends a lot on your style/technique.  Personally I mix paints, so these are ideal.

Let's explain what they are NOT.  They are not Triads.
You have a "base" and a "highlight" of each colour.  If you applied the base, then the highlight, the figures wouldn't look good.  I apply the base.  Then I mix in a small amount of the highlight into the base and apply.  Then some more of the highlight, etc.

As for accuracy of colours, I'm no expert but I think they look pretty good.  Not that I've used them for "intended" purpose much yet, but I have used them.

First chap on the end with revolver.  Shirt, jacket and trousers all Panzer Aces.  Chap on the end leaning, jacket Panzer aces.

Jacket, helmet and cap - Panzer aces.

As you might guess, I recommend the paints.   :)

And has anyone used them in airbrushes? I have a number of 15mm AFVs & ATGs that I want to paint up up for a Tobruk scenario and I want a quicker way than brush painting the large amount of vehicles & guns. I will still hand paint the figures but............

Thanks Guys for your thoughts. OT I too don't use paint straight from the jar, but mix, something that seemed right.

Thanks again,

Helen

I only have a handful, handpicked shades. Oddly enough they are mainly the khakis and I use them to pretty much do the same as OT.
