Modular factory terrain?
« on: February 24, 2010, 08:14:56 PM »
I am looking for a particular terrain kit, or rather I have been wonder where it came from for some time. Urban mammoth sell it as biotoxin plant set, but I know others sell it as well. (or are those very similar kits?) I have heard it mentioned as being produced by Pegasus but I can’t find it in their catalogue.
Anyhow, I wondered if I should have put this in the bazaar but I’m not looking for where it comes from, rather than a single buy, and I think others might profit from it as well.

Of course should some other company produce some more similar or better kit I would love to know.

It's made by Pegasus.

According to the box, they're made by Technolog, a russian company. No website that I know of. Apparently Imex and Pegasus are the main western importers. I'm guessing they are the most direct source, aside from tracking down the russian manufacturer.

Found a couple of peices here not bad prices either

It had something to do with Robogear by airfix and you can pick up the box sets off ebay for around £20

The original Russian manufacturer both of these building kits and of Robogear was Tehnolog (no "c" in the transcription into the latin alphabet).  Here's Boardgamegeek's info about them:
http://www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgamepublisher/3481/tehnolog
The link given on that page to Tehnolog's own website didn't work when I tried it.

OK, Steve F just posted, but even so...

I've been tracking this stuff for about two years now, it's quite complicated, and my conclusions are:

the sets that Matakishi show were sold in the UK and US as part of the 'Robogear' range. They were manufactured by Pegasus; they also had something to do with Imex. 'Robogear' was owned by Technolog in Russia, but I don't think they ever made or indeed licenced the Platformer sets - they just seem to have approved Pegasus's use of 'Robogear' as a trademark. Robogear vehicles were manufactured (or at least marketed) by Airfix, in the UK, Pegasus or Imex in the US.

Skip forward a couple of years; the Chamical Plant set has now been re-branded (in the UK and Australia at least) as the Bio-toxin Plant; it's marketed by Urban Mammoth as part of their 'Urban War' range, and includes both the old Chemical Plant set, and part of the Platformer set. I believe in the US it's still sold as Chemical Plant, without the Platformer parts, under the Pegasus name.

What it's marketed as '3m below sea level' (Netherlands?) I don't know; but I got a Bio-toxin Plant in the about 2 months ago for about £11 or £12... and that included Platformer pieces as well. A lot cheaper than the £20 for only the Chemical Plant that Abhorsen mentions.

Hope that helps...

Greater Gods, no wonder I was confused.  ???
I think I did see it on the robogear page once, and the urban mammoth page as well, then heard it mentioned as being a Pegasus product.
so how is the actual kit? Worth getting? I would probably use it to ad details to my generic sci-fi ruined city and cannibalize for VSF parts.

Red orc, I indeed live in the Netherlands. (good guess?)
Thanks for the quick response everybody, I have to say the exact (legal) nature and origin of this product seems rather vague and obscure.

Not that many places to choose from under the sea...  had to be the Netherlands really lol

I like the kit - when I started looking for it, I was after some parts for 40k Ork vehicles - boilers and pipes etc. Along the way I got into VSF, so, boilers and pipes etc... what can I say, I like boilers and pipes!

I think it's a good kit, especially for about £12 (about E14 is that? I'm sorry, I can't find my 'Euro' key on this keyboard). The platforms are a bit fiddly, not as good as the Hexagon sets that are produced by the same confusing mix of people; but the Platformers are compatible with the Chemical Plant/Bio-toxin Plant sets. The boilers, pipes and whatnot are good I think, and one of the nicest things about them is that the pipes are the same diameter as standard plastic drinking straws, so you can cheaply and easily add long pipes to the mix.

So yeah, for both generic sci-fi and VSF, I think it's a good one.

Good luck finding the one you want!

I usually buy mine from this Ebay seller:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Wargames-Terrain-Scenery-Bio-Toxin-Plant-sci-fi_W0QQitemZ200413630065QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Toys_Wargames_RL?hash=item2ea9954e71

The Robogear UK line (by Airfix) never sold the Bio-Toxin Plant as far as I know, only the Platformer and Hexagon kits. Imex sold the same Robogear line than Airfix, but in the US instead of the UK. But in the US, the Bio-Toxin Plant was sold by Pegasus, that imported it from Russia (with several other kits). In the UK, after Airfix dropped the Robogear line, Urban Mammoth started selling the 3 kits - Bio-Toxin Plant, Platformer and Hexagon as part of their line.

I think I got the story straight...lol

Looks good...

The main point to stress I think is that the Bio-Toxin Plant (Urban Mammoth/Urban War, UK and Australia at least) isn't the same pack as the Chemical Plant (Pegasus/Robogear, USA at least); the Bio-toxin Plant contains additional Platformer sprues (and possibly fewer 'Chemical Plant' sprues?).

I think it pretty much a 50/50 pack. A good buy if you're not sure which one to pick.

As a side note - the tubes take forever to build, and the plastic doesn't really want to be glued together with regular plastic glue. I have a bunch of these and wasn't too happy with them.

Yeah, at Fantasiapelit, near the helsinki train station. Worth the visit - good selection of boardgames and rpg's and very helpful staff (even though I dont work there anymore...). The miniatures stuff is quite heavily GW-biased as that seems to be all that finns are willing to buy.

Webpages at: http://www.fantasiapelit.com/. A not-so helpful "how to get there" at http://www.fantasiapelit.com/index.php?main=info&sub=helsinki

The english speaking webpages are quite bad to be honest, so you'd better use the finnish ones: "tuotehaku" on the left is product search, type in what you want and hit "etsi". If the line "saatavuus" in the product description has a (+) after it the product should be available. If you/she need/s a hand send me a PM/Email - I work five minutes away from there and practically walk past it every day. And there's an escalator from the store to a very nice bar where I usually hang out...

edit: current list of discounted miniature products: http://www.fantasiapelit.com/index.php?kuvariveja=50&main=ai&yhteen=&etsittava=_netti2&offset=0&kat=sekal&mista=kampanja&jarj=miniatyyripeli&jamista=luokka&jamika=miniatyyri&kuvahaku=1&luok=&submit.x=38&submit.y=10 horrible link, sorry...
