Big Bertha Shell Question
« on: February 25, 2010, 08:32:01 PM »
hi all,

I'm looking for a favour, does anyone know where I can find a photo of a big bertha shell preferably with someone standing beside it for scale or with some dimensions?  I know the caliber is 420mm but no idea of the length and shape of the projectile.  I want to make up some full and empty shell cases to sit around my HLBS model  :)

thanks in advance for any help
Andy

I found some some images, unfortunately without crew members next to any projectile:

The first pic in the second link could be used to derive the shell dimensions, since calibre would be 42cm/15.7inch; you could then approximately calculate the length of the shell, although the perspective isn't a direct side elevation...

Note that each shot is split into projectile ("Granate") and propellant charge ("Kartusche").
