Good books and magazines?
« on: March 02, 2010, 05:55:31 PM »
Can anyone suggest interesting books during this period, (especially but not only German colonies)?

Are there any magazines for this period that would be of the same quality as White Dwarf?

From the British persepctive try "Queen Victoria's Little Wars" by Byron Farwell.  It covers lots of small to large wars thoughout her long reign and is a fun read as well.

A great little book I have and recommend is called
'BATTLE IN AFRICA 1879 - 1914' by Howard Whitehouse with excellent illustrations by Peter Dennis. I also have a copy of the ACW book in the same format which is also excellent.

This is sort of off the mark, but you might want to dig around for old copies of Chatterbox Magazine. It was a British magazine for boys that was published from 1866 to ?.  It was full of tales of derring-do and, IIRC actual accounts of current fighting. It was also chock-full of fantastic period illustrations. I stumbled across an annual compilation from the 1890s at a garage sale many years ago and it inspired many a plastic battle between brave tommies and wily Boers and Pathans in my younger days. I wish I could find where I put it!

Naturally Chatterbox focuses on the exploits of Britain's hearty native sons, but I thought you and others with interest in the period might be interested. I managed to find links to some images from the 1916 annual http://www.fromoldbooks.org/Chatterbox-1916/ and what appears to be a compilation of the magazine's more military-oriented illustrations with short captions/explanations http://www.archive.org/stream/chatterboxbookof00robi#page/n0/mode/2up . I hadn't realized the magazine was still going by WW1, now I want to track down some more of them!

Try "Savage & Soldier" it was a magazine written for more than 30 years in the latter decades of last century and was dedicated to the Colonial Era. It was full of historical data for all the European Empires.  Sadly the hard print magazine stopped many years ago but here is a site with many of the articles:

Yeah, archive.org has made tons of rare and OOP books available. They also have old movies, audio books, and free music there (all with the consent of the artists, I should add).
