Pirate game table

I saw a tutorial for a circular wargaming table on  Shifting Lands http://www.shiftinglands.com/pirates.htm

I wanted to build one myself to a) see how long it would take.
                                           b)see how much it would cost.

Now, my board will be 36" in diameter. I will only count actual working time.

Materials:
1/4 MDF 4x4 sheet ($1.00 in scrap bin at local D-I-Y store)

First, using a table saw, I cut the sheet into 36"x36". I found the middle of the sheet and marked it with an "X".

I made a jig to fit on the base of the router and attached it to the router. I then measured the jig to be the length of the radius or 18" (18"+18"+36").

I screwed the middle of the jig to the "X" and cut out the circle.

Total Time: 1 hour
Total Cost: $1.00

On a side note. The pirate game I am referring to is Pirates of the Spanish Main and all of the related releases.

I suppose I could use it for some Black Scorpion Pirates that I've had my eyes on also.

I then stopped at Home Depot and picked up three (light, medium, and dark) different coloured cans of blue spray paint.
(3 x  $5.49 = $16.47)

Once I brought the table home, I sprayed  a medium coat across the entire surface. I just did one coat. My wife says it looks good as is, but I have other plans.
Time : 5 minutes + 25 minutes drying time = 30 minutes

Total Time: 1hr, 30 min
Total Cost: $17.47

Today was very very productive!

I sprayed the second coat across the table, giving it a uniform appearance.
Time: 5 minutes
Then I dropped of my wife and got a hair cut. Check!  When I came home it was dry. Double Check!!
I'll add + 25 minutes of drying time.

When I came home I sprayed the dark blue lightly onto the surface in a blotchy pattern.
Time: 5 minutes + 25 min drying.

When this was dry, I repeated the above step with white.
Time: 5 minutes + 25 min drying.

Time Today: Only 15 minutes, however I will include 75 minutes of drying time as not everyone can time manage like me!!
15+75 = 90 Minutes
Cost Today: $0.00 Triple Check!!!

Total Time: 3hrs
Total Cost: $17.47

I did take photos of all the stages but have run out of time as I have to leave for work.
Tomorrow = pictures.

I helped a neighborhood kid, a skateboarder/Goth/whatever dude, make this spinning table,(like a lazy susan spice table) 36'' round like this, of a skateboard park.  You spin it, and do this finger skateboard routine.  I don't know, it was in 1/24 scale, so I did it.

Pretty cool.  You could jump, ride pipe (that meant something different in my generation  ), and stuff.  He and his freinds seem to enjoy it.

Recap with photos. Finally figured it out.

Basic table shape.


With 1 coat of medium blue spray paint.


 Another view. Very patchy. Need another coat.


With 2nd coat. Much more uniform appearance.


With dark blue lines for depth/shading.


With white lines for highlights.

The shading/highlights appear very dominant. A light dusting of medium blue I think will help tone them down.

So far. 1hr20min in actual working time. 3 hours drying time.

Never seen a round gaming board.  Pretty cool.  I don't know what size they are or how hard to cut it would be but what about some of that clear textured plastic they use in fluorescent light fixtures?  It would simulate water and break up the colors underneath a bit.

cool stuff! too bad you didnt do this last year or you could have joined the Pirates Ocean terrain contest i hosted! In total there was 8 finished entries, with some real cool stuff made. There is a rather active pirates of the spanish main community at miniaturetrading.com as well as the old ocean contest thread if you are looking for some ideas.
