Help please......looking for game table pictures
« on: August 19, 2013, 07:39:30 PM »
I have come to a bit of a "mental block" building a set of modular scenery for Spinespur games on a 3ftx3ft table.

I need some inspirational pictures of gaming tables that are somewhere between "modern zombie; all was fine until yesterday" and "Fallout; total devastation nuclear armageddon" looks. Both of which are great in their own way but neither of which really capture the feel of the Spinespur setting.

I am after something like modern Detroit ghettos (of which I have a bunch of google images) where the buildings are semi derelict/dirty but still recognisable and occupied.  Recognisable apartment and office buildings not tin sheet shacks. I have started by trashing some old World Works card buildings I made for Infinity a few years ago to make them into film set style frontage only, but am looking for ideas on how to tie it all together as a theme.

Anyone done similar or know of any picture references?

Thanks.

Thanks Mark, I have been a regular viewer of your zombie thread since its early days......wonderful collection of figures and scenics making for a great gaming table.  I doubt my effort will be nearly as eye-catching.

Spinespur as a place/setting is pretty much unique in that the collection of evil psycho's, deviant's and sicko's who live there do not take any pride in the place at all, they actively despise it. I am aiming for something far dirtier and less well maintained........may not actually be a viable (or enjoyable) table at the end of the day.

These are some of the concept images I am hoping to achieve:

I have been looking through threads on various gaming fora but have not found anything similar yet.....hence the plea for help.

Cheers Scurv, "Life after people" I am aware of (...god I hate the US TV habit of 12 min segments of which the first 5 min is a recap of the previous segment)

Detropia is a new one to me though so I am off to hunt out a rental/stream.

I concur. watched it last night after reading Scurv's post. Interesting topic and images but indeed a drag to watch with those recaps  :-[

Scatter terrain will give the streets that dirty look.  Here is a link to what I have posted on my blog.
http://snitchythedog.blogspot.com/2012/06/street-litter.html
The basic concept is to make litter that is attached in clumps that can be rearranged as needed.  There are several toots out there on green stuff trash bags that are helpful.  For paper litter, inked or "teaed" printer paper or packing paper will work a treat.   At this point I cannot help you with buildings since all of my stuff has moved and I am still stuck here.  >:(
Hope that helps.

Google "Gary, Indiana" - large parts of Life After People was filmed in Gary. Their church is particularly interesting.

I can also recommend the book 'The World without Us', which was written by the author of the original thought experiment article on which the 'Life after People' series was based.

In it, he elaborates on the subject, basing his findings on thorough research. It even has a pretty comprehensive source list in the back.

Basically, he describes the physical processes involved in the gradual decay of all human products, be they skyscrapers, roads, ships, crop fields or thoroughbred horses, should they all be abandoned at once.

I found it a really entertaining read and it should spawn quite some ideas.

Might I also recommend the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. games? The urban levels should provide some ideas (Call of Prypyat especially). Also, the 'now' above ground scenes in 12 Monkeys, and maybe also The Road (can't judge; I have it on DVD but haven't seen it yet), maybe the original Robocop movie too; after all it's set in a near future, decayed Detroit...

I'm suprised no one has mentioned Matakishi's Teahouse.... though I suppose it goes without saying. *shrug*

Build them as per the instructions but when when you paint them, don't make them so clean. Lots of weathering and grime, soot, rust, and water stains. And don't forget graffiti. Board some of the windows over and maybe add some fire/smoke damage.
