Uniforms of 19th Century Portugal?
« on: April 17, 2010, 09:51:57 PM »
Lots of sports uniforms and some modern military but the 1800-1899 time period much harder to find.

Leads?

Edit: Post-Napoleonic of special interest.

Gracias,

Glenn

I find the best way to find references on the net for uniforms is to find out a translation for a few key words in the language  the country that you are looking for.

Example: Military Uniform in Portuguese is exército uniforme. So a search for exército uniforme portugal under google images leads us to a cool site!

As you translate more specific terms you'll find more.

There was an article by Ron Vaughan in Savage and Soldier XX1 no1. It includes a history and a page of line drawings (8 figures). If you send me a personal email I can email you a pdf.
My address is principlesofwar AT tiscali DOT co DOT uk.

Perhaps this may be of use to you.
Uniformes Militares Portugueses - Ribeiro Arthur (1984-87)
Coronel Ribeiro Arthur, "Uniformes Militares Portugueses"
Arquivo Histórico-Militar | 1984-87 | ISBN: none | 206 cards | JPG | 77, 62, and 36 MB

Postcards from the Ribeiro Arthur watercolors held by the Portuguese Military Historical Archive in Lisbon. The sets cover metropolitan and overseas (Brazil, Macau, Africa, India) units from the 18th century to circa 1900. Unfortunately only Sets 1 through 20 and 25 through 28 were available. Each set contains nine cards.

Colonials. Early 20 century (officer will also work as late 19 century)

late 19 century colonilals.

I think its somewhere from 1860 to 1890, but I am not sure. (I am only assuming this because most countries start to adopt khaki fror 1880 to WW1.)

There is a Foundry book that has a few pages dedicated to Portugal:

http://www.amazon.com/COLONIAL-ARMIES-AFRICA-1850-1918-Organisation/dp/1901543072

There are 22 pages devoted to Portugal, which is about 22 more than you find in most other books on colonial Africa :) Germany only has 16, with Britain getting the most coverage.

There are 32 illustrated uniforms including a couple native auxiliaries. Like others in the series it is B&W. I have to admit that I have not yet read the section on Portugal so I can't comment on how useful it might be, although it looks promising.

As far as I can tell Foundry doesn't have it for sale anymore and the Amazon price is sick- I don't know what the story is there, as it was just published in 2006.
