Rules sets for Fallout games?
« on: April 28, 2010, 07:34:07 PM »
I've seen lots of people (not just on the LAF) reconstructing the fallout world in miniature, and now I'm curious as to what rule sets people are using to play.

I am currently modifying the old Necromunda ruleset from GW to fit the world better - renaming guns, etc. I have the basics done, and now I am working re-doing the various scenarios and campaign rules. Have to add things like healing from radiation, and such. One of the first things I have done is made the base model have multiple wounds, so that there is a point to having things that allow them to heal, like Nuka-Cola machines, or radioactive mud baths.

I wrote up a small set of rules for "Legends of the Old West" because it has a nice "easy approach" and "anything's depictable" feel to it.

There's also a PDF of the wargame rules that were supplied with one of the original Fallout games floating around. The mechanisms are sensible, not too cluttered, and you got a ton of stats already worked out; however, it lacks specific rules for the Enclave, but you could use the Brotherhood rules as a basis.

You can download the PDF and supplementing materials here: http://fallout-rpg.narod.ru/Warfare.html. Russian page, but seems clean and unproblematic (my (corporate) Virus scanner doesn't give alerts). Downloaded the rules from there.

I started writing my own rules set some time ago. It's based on the system used in Cosmic Horror, but altered for Fallout. I think most of it is done, but the campaign system, creatures and different groups roaming the wastes have to be added. I put it up on my webspace to download:

Time ago I wrote a mod of Fallout 2 to be played with CR 2.0. It's Fallout2 and it's for CR 2.0, but I think it's pretty good and can be easily adapted to any other system, including CR 3.0.
You can find it in the THW yahoo group: http://games.groups.yahoo.com/group/twohourwargames/files/Javier%27s%20stuff/

I do some rules specifically designed for Post Apoc gaming, called Nuclear Renaissance. I think it would be a great way to simulate Fallout.

Its free to download(or you can buy a printed copy!)

Although I have only played Mutants & Death Ray Guns of the above listed rules (and they are excellent!!!), I'm going to have to add the "Skank Rules" into the pot. They are still my favorite for PA gaming.

Their entire website is wroth a good looking over!

I'd opt for Nuclear Renaisssance. It has the same tongue in cheek approach to the apocalypse as I remeber fall out having.

There's a wide range of possibilities in construction of characters and yet the game plays smooth and simple.
Campaign rules and stuff is coming soon too.

Oh and it's free for download at Ramshackle Games. So you can check it out without hurting your wallet.

I am very interested in gaming the Fallout and Wasteland genres and I am also looking for a good set of rules.  I have looked at a number of different rules but haven't found anything I really like for post apocalyptic gaming.

Has anyone tried Atomic Cafe for gaming Fallout?

oh and this is my first post to LAF... whatever.

Welcome!

I have only tried CZ and Skank for PA gaming.

I've not played the Fallout ruleset although I have it around somewhere.

To add to Chris's comments, the original Fallout: Warfare miniature rules are available for free here too, under FOW.Rules.zip.  I've no idea what they play like but... They are updated to Fallout 2 , but adding in the extra bits shouldn't be that difficult I'd have thought.
