Soviet armor at Khalkin-Gol/Nomonhan
« on: 11 May 2010, 10:55:29 PM »
Hey, everybody.

So, I'm in the process of actually moving toward starting another project instead of just talking about it. In this case Nomonhan, 1939, using "Through Mud and Blood" (I think it will translate nicely.) I've got a few sources, and I have a general understanding of what happened, when, etc. Fortunately, due to my entirely unreasonable fascination with Japanese Armor, I've got a good grasp of what was there with the 3rd and 4th armored regiments.

However, the sources are rather vague as per the Soviet armor at Nomonhan. The best source I have says that they were "BT Tanks", and mentions a few armored cars. I seem to recall that most of the armored cars were early BA models, but the BT tanks thing has got me stumped.

Don't suppose anybody knows what they were using? BT-5s? BT-7s? Others? Did they have T-26's? The Japanese accounts don't mention these last ones, but I suppose anything is possible. Don't need real precise numbers, as I'm going for a "large skirmish" (so perhaps three tanks on a side at most, in most cases), but it'd be nice to know how to work these out

Thanks, in advance.

-Alex

Hi Alex,

One of my favourite periods.

Bt 5 and 7s were used along with T26 and CHT 26.T 37, FAI, BA-3, BA-6, BA-10 and BA-20. Konsomoletz tractors in addition for towing artillery guns etc.

My favourite is the SU-12 SP guns that saw action as well.

Cheers,

Helen
Best wishes,
Helen

Thanks much for the aid, Helen. It looks like the SU-1-12 isn't available in 28mm, either. Something I'll have to think about fixing.

I a small collection of War Monthly Magazine, one of them featuring an article on Khalkin-Gol. Very, very nice, with coloured illustration based on photographies in the Mollo style. These articles tend to be very well researched so I am sure it lists a few tanks used on both sides. There are pictures to, as I recall. Bloody good periodical, that. Is it still around?

I think it's a lighting issue. Read the original thread here.

Albeit rather heavily biased in terms of Japanese sources but the reference you really should read is Alvin Coox's Nomonhan, it remains the seminal work on the topic in any language. The late Prof John Erickson is a useful corrective to Coox.
