F&IW New York Independent Company - PAINTED - UPDATE 2nd Sept

I'm looking to put together a unit of the New York Independents:



Am having a major problem finding either a compatible figure, not even one with conversion potential from AWI, Napoleonic and other ranges.  Size-wise, my collection is mostly Conquest, then Perry, Eureka and some Crusader.

Has anyone else put together a unit of these?

Does anyone have any suggestions (including conversion possibilities, as I'm expecting to be able to substitute with 'Brown Bess' and tricorn where necessary)?

Of course you already know about the Eureka provincials. The only down side to putting gs leggings on them is that the Eureka figures are a bit "stiff". I like them and have used 24 for my 60th regiment (and have another 24 to use as either VA or PA provincials eventually), but I wouldn't want too many of them in an F&I force due to the lack of poses.

What do you think of using Eureka's "ragged continentals"? A couple of the Marblehead figures might work also.

For that matter I suppose you might be able to use some other continentals from companies like Perry. The main difference is the leggings.

Basically, the same coat as the rangers in the Galloping Major FIW RAN 1 pack, with a tricorne substituted for the cap:

Good call GM. Any chance you'd eventually convert those greens? (tricornes, lose the belly boxes) There is a real dearth of suitable provincials.

I've had a quick look through the Perry listings and maybe AW74 and AW75 would do, Hesse-Cassel jaeger figures http://www.perry-miniatures.com/index2.html

You'd have to add the gaiters, but I'm assuming they are for small scale games.

Whatever you decide to do please keep us updated. I love watching labors of love like this. I'm still looking for my damned manual of arms.

By the way, if you look at the May issue (#271) of Wargames Illustrated there is a nice history and scenario for the Battle of Sideling Hill which took place down the pike from my place in 1756. I only mention it because it is an interesting article and not at all because it features photos of some of my miniatures.

The Bess looks good overall, but is perhaps a bit short (?). I really need to find time to get the green stuff out and try some sculpting again. I gave it a shot a couple of years ago and found it enjoyable, but my Iroquois looked more like a bad Star Trek creature than anything human.

My friend who wrote the Sideling Hill article tells me he is working on another one based on the rescue/retaliation effort the settlers launched against the Indian town of Kittanning later in that year. I've offered to lend out whatever he needs again. My figures came out looking much better in the article than they ever do in my pathetic photo attempts!

Is it really? Amazing how the eye can perceive things differently just on background or context. I thought the Eureka Bess looked pretty good. As is I'd say it would work well for a "Jager" style Christian Springs rifle.

Looking good! A bit late now, but some of Eureka's new SYW Saxons look like they might work for conversion fodder also. The cuffs look too large and the pompoms need trimmed off the tricorns, but otherwise I think they are pretty close.

Looks promising! Very useful as generic later F&I / Pontiac's rebellion troops in general.
