Which rules?
« on: 23 May 2010, 01:34:25 PM »
I am working on a small side project and I wonder which fast, easy rules for early WWII, 28mm skirmish level, vehicles included, work best.

I have a copy of Disposable Heroes and a Coffin for Seven Brothers, although I've never tried them, but they do look rather good. There's an early war supplement, too.

"Road to Hell" is very easy and free: http://www.dadiepiombo.com/uc2.html

"Chain of Command" will appear later this year. It's based on "Through the Mud and the Blood", which I think is an excellent game, realistic, fast and fun at the same time :)

I recommend NUTS from Two - Hour Wargames.  MG42 is their rudimentary free demo rules.

I second Nuts.  It's my rules of choice for WWII.  Especially if you want to play solo or co-op.

Edit... because I can't spell.

Nuts! is great, there is a new version out now I've not tried, but we've played and enjoyed the older one.  Works best for a squad a side, with reinforcements arriving to expand the battle on the fly.

Also worth considering are Rules of Engagement, usually a platoon a side with support, good suppression and morale rules in this one:

And World at War from Agis/Mongoose, for a platoon plus support again, lovely system that is very clean and simple to learn, less pining and more death than RoE which makes for faster play.

I definitely support going for Disposable Heroes.

I think they are an easy & fun set of rules.

(Not knocking any of the other suggestions, mind you)

If you want to be a squad leader, then go for Nuts!

If you want to be a platoon commander, then Rules of Engagment or Disposable Heroes.

Don't like World at War, it's not much "WWII" and more like 40K.

Thank you all! To be honest  Road to Hell seems to be ju-u-ust what the doctor ordered, and they are free. I just hope they are balanced, which is often something you sacrifice on the altar of 'fast and simple'.

Depends on what level you are looking to play
If you are playing platoon level, plus tank and aircraft(up to three platoons)then i like Triumph & Tragedy
I love playing them for WW1 to 1923, SCW and for the rif wars
They are fast to play and ease to pick up, plus you do need a brain to get the order of the cards right otherwise your plans go very wrong and your units die quickly.
Going to try playing then for WW2 on monday

For future reference, let me also recommend AE-WWII. Yes, it's a Weird War game, but you can just choose not to use the Weird options, and it plays as a great skirmish-level game. (Between 3 and 20 figs per side, and tanks are scary.) Worth checking out.
