Dan Dare (Antennociti Warthog added 13/07/10)
« on: 14 June 2010, 08:35:15 PM »
Having been inspired by the Very British Cconquest of Space idea over on GWP3 (http://gwargamesp.18.forumer.com/index.php?showtopic=2662), I have painted and completed my first figure in almost 6 months, have had a really dry spell.
I took him from my existing collection of unpainted lead. He is an adventurer/hero by the name of Daniel Darius Arbuthnott, known by his mates as Dan Dare.
He is from Artizan Designs, Thrilling Tales range: PLP028 - Captain Haggan
I am quite pleased with him, although ther are areas not sure of, (I may change his gun later), but I am very happy the painting drought is over. Sorry about my poor photography.

Like how the shirt has come out.

Really pleased with the "Eagle" logo.

My Union Jacks need more work.

A bit blurry sorry.
I have the next figure already prepped on the painting table, a Naval General, not Major Huppert

PLP010 - Major Cadd

and have a small shopping list for not Digby

PLP150 - Tankie Bob

as not Jocelyn

PLP040 - Lily

Will also be using their Immortal Battallion figures as Naval Landing Party, and some of their Cossacks for Soviets. Also will find a use for their Sky Pirates.

The only criticism I have is that he looks definitely un-British in his raggedness! lol

Apart from that, nicely done. I like the little Union Jack and the eagle logo (nice touch!) on his back.

The Union FLAG (Jacks fly from the rear of a battleship) is really well done, as is the eagle. But yeah, he looks too ragged to be British, definately a yank.  ;)

Very British Conquest of Space, nice idea!  lol

Nice work Simon, any plans for space ships?

Knowing my track record I will paint about 8 characters and two opposed 10 man units (enough for a basic skirmish) before starting on space ships, although I have just acquired this on Ebay, it is two foot long, need to pick up from Cobham, (so may try to pop into see you?).

From a comment on the GWP3 thread I quite fancy converting one of these

into an X-Wing.
Have one of these in storage unmade

and quite like the look of this

Lots of plans lets hope I can stay on task!

Sorry for a lack of updates, I am awaiting some guns from Hasslefree, I have rebased Dan Dare (need to replace gun) and finished off Digby (also needs gun) and Major Hubert. Will have photo's hopefully by the weekend.
On the workbench, are figures for Jocelyn, Hank, Uncle Ivor, A man from the Ministry and a Command Vehicle. Still looking for a suitable figure for Pierre.
I have now planned out the figures I will be using for British Infantry, Russians, and an Alien Treen like race with their large headed leader.
The only criticism I have is that he looks definitely un-British in his raggedness! lol
I know, but as I am re-interpreting the characters for the VBCOS setting, I am happy to overlook this, and now he is painted I have no inclination to get the Green Stuff out (even though it did cross my mind after reading this).
As for rules I am awaiting my copy of AE-Bounty to arrive and I am hoping their customisable nature and ship board as well as planet based rules  will be adaptable.

Whilst waiting for the guns to arrive, I thought I would paint the Antennociti Warthog as a ommand vehicle, still need to add some more stowage.

And a couple with the figures painted so far (no close ups, til the guns are done)

I decided to go with the clear bases (aviailable from Oshiro Model Terrain: http://www.oshiromodelterrain.co.uk/gamingaids.html, excellent friendly and helpful company with good service) as I wish my games to take place in corridors as well as alien planets and this seems the best solution.

Also, note - I'm an American so take above question with pinch of salt.  ;)   lol

EMA model supplies, http://www.ema-models.co.uk/catalogue/0131-hemispherical-domes.html
they were rather thick, but do look very effective, the head was just chopped off halfway through the face and after A LOT of sanding the head fitted under the dome, the head was stuck directly onto the vehicle, and once painted the dome was glued on with PVA glue (as superglue has a tendency to fog on clear plastic).

Excellent.

But I seem to recall Dan Dare's uniform as more of an emerald green?
