Near Future Mercenaries
« on: June 18, 2010, 12:17:57 AM »
Hi folks,

last weekend at Durham Wargames Show, I purchased a set of Playwar's "Near Future Mercenaries".

Nice figures, well-sculpted, cleanly-cast (some very minor mould lines, but no flash). Best of all, their style and size should make them compatible with other figures from Foundry (Street Violence), Hasslefree (I'll get a "Grant" to increase the squad size later), and probably Copplestone. Possibly less compatible with EM-4 Future Warriors and Infinity figures due to smaller size and/or more slender build.

Anti-Tank Rifle:

Sniper:

Point Woman:

Assault Rifle:

Squad Automatic Weapon:

GPMG:

Comms:

Those are very nice figures, reasonably priced at 2,50 GBP apiece; I'd happily recommend them. I've based them to be basically compatible with Lt. Hazel's RCW-2 project, where I'll probably use them as corporate mercenaries. I'll admit the camo pattern is not particularly suited to Russia, but whatever (they are very, very loosely based on Rhodesian Bush War camo patterns).

I got these a while back, but other than primed and based, no paint.

Yours are fantastic!  I was really pleased with the quality of the sculpts.

Well done sir!

Very nice, a little pricey if I do say so myself. For those prices, I'd stick to the Copplestones. Perhaps, if I needed more similar, I'd get these.

There's something about the sculpts (sculpting style?) that does not appeal to me.

Painting is good, as always.

The one with the blue and white scarf is exceptional.  All painted very well though.  Great work.

Don't know what people are blathering about here, I've got a few of them and they are well sculpted and very cleanly cast.

Great for Preadtor fodder!

Don't know what people are blathering about here,

Well,

1) as far as I can see from the pics, the men have very big heads, and the woman a very small one on a very long neck.

2) It seems to me that the hands of some of them are excessively big - and not even same size on the same figure.

3) The weapons look odd to me. Maybe oversized.

4) The woman's right arm looks as if she could scratch her feet without bending over.

I'm not out to offend you, but I have to say, that for a person that is normally very quick to criticize minis you don't like, you're also very quick to make negative comments on other people's opinions.

I've made one general comment on a number of negative comments made by individuals, so I don't see a problem here sorry?

Anyway, definately agree/point taken with regards to the female sculpt, but as I don't have her I can't compare the pics to the metal.

Those I do have and can check the metal against the picture, look fine. painting style, lighting angles, all have an impact on the final picture. I would encourage you to look at the minis in the metal.

The weapons: will always be an issue as for those of us used to TAG or Hasslefree for example, and yes they appear 'heroic' in scale in a few shots, but then again in fairness if you're looking for historical accuracy then no.

Bottom line is no offence taken (or for that matter ment) and remember at the end of the day this is opinion, which is there to be supported, challenged, questioned or downright disagreed with if the muses take us in that direction. Remember my comment was based on your opinion. Your entitled to your opinion as am I.

It is only bits of metal after all.

;)

Well, it's not likely that I should be able to look at them 'in the metal' as I do not intend to buy them. I don't like them, and that's the end of that.

What I reacted at was not you liking them as opposed to me, merely that I felt that I (and others) were debased simply for not agreeing on the quality of the minis.

I would suggest that you sit back, look at your comment, and think of how you would feel if someone said you were 'blathering' the next time you utter a negative comment on a mini.

I'm not mad, just explaining my point of view.  :)

I dont mind them but I do think the weapons seem to be too large but would fit well with TAG minis

And from my perspective I suggest that you look at how you react to a tongue in cheek turn of phrase. I think we've both made our points so let's hear no more about it and if you're ever at Salute I'll get you a beer! ;)

Anyway.... back to the minis.
