Scale Guide
« on: 02 August 2010, 12:22:10 PM »
I've put together a Scale comparison table and posted it on my blog >[BLMA Link] .

I've drawn together information from various sources into what I hope is a useful guide/comparison chart. I've not made reference to proportion in this guide, and is mearly a comparison of scale as stated by the manufacturers. Its very much a work-in-progress and feedback is encouraged. Once I'm happy that it is comprehensive and accurate I'll put it up as a permanent reference page.

Pop over, take a look and please feel free to leave feedback.

"Lasciate ogne speranza, voi ch'intrate."  :(

Unfortunately this topic is a gigantic can of worms. If you have ever touched it on other forums, you already know there's plenty of debate yet very little agreement. Especially around the popular "GW scale" (which itself is highly variable), terms like 25mm, 28mm, 32mm, true, heroic, epic, eye level etc. become a sad mess. Then we have the artistic or technical exaggeration. Oh dear.

I suggest adding a gigantic disclaimer and then seeking cover. Because our toys are not proper scale models, the matter becomes highly unscientific and mostly driven by personal agendas. No scale guide can be more than a rough approximation today so you should state it clearly from the very beginning.

I see you're already fixing and html'ing the table. We can discuss the factual (;D) matters when that's been done. Or maybe I'll just seek cover...

I know what you mean about it being a touchy subject. I've toyed with this subject for months but bottled out (until now) expecting a backlash. I've deliberately ignored discussion of proportion and anatomical correctness and just stuck to the stated manufacturers 'scale'. Us gamers refer to scale in size (eg 28mm or 15mm) but that isn't really a scale at all. We should be refering to the ratio/fraction but we don't - and I have no intention of getting bogged down in that debate! The fact is gamers (on the whole) have a more relaxed attitude to the whole subject than say Scale Modellers, and its with a gamers 'eye' that I am looking at this.

Like I said before, this is a work in progress and I'm hoping to expand, update and correct several times before its finished.

I've updated the guide and added it as a static page on my blog. I'll continue to update as necessary but in the meantime you can see the latest update of the guide at BLMA Page Link
