Scale guide for the Lledo Days Gone By cars?
« on: January 09, 2014, 04:16:42 AM »
I know there are a couple of pages that give the true scales for the Matchbox Models of Yesteryear vehicles, but is there one for the Lledo line? Tried Googling a bit but nothing turned up.

AFAIK there is no scale published for Lledo models, they are "box sized" like Matchbox MoY, but unlike MoY there is no scale quoted on the box (probably why a Matchbox scale list exists but not one for Lledo).

The only way I know of scaling Lledo is to pick a couple of measurements, such as wheelbase and track and look up the 1:1 scale measurement and do the maths.

An alternative I have used is when I've got access to an equivalent Matchbox model and to compare this with the Lledo to get a rough scale for the latter.

Best of luck, Tim

p.s. am I the only one who isn't too certain that the quoted scale for MoY isn't always accurate?

I've found that once or twice. The Matchbox Morris bullnose is listed as 1:50, but is tiny, barely bigger than a hot wheels car. It's totally unsuitable for any sort of 28mm gaming, even if you're being very generous about scale.

My main goal for pulp is to make sure I have at least one of each car "type": big trucks, little trucks, old jalopy, small "economy" car, ordinary mid-sized sedan, fancy rich man's roadster, big saloon, and an armoured car.

The hardest ones to find were the saloon and the "economy" car. I eventually found a cheap big saloon (the Matchbox Mercedes 770) that'll work fine, but the small "economy" post-WWI car eludes me. I have my eye on a couple of Lledo ones and don't mind if they're a bit smaller than the Matchbox cars, but I don't want to waste money again on something that doesn't work at all.

Blue Moon Manufacturing makes some nice cars, but they are rather expensive like most metal and resin models.

There is also the 1/48 soviet staff car by Tamyia, the GAZ M-1 Emka. It is soviet copy of a 1933 (?) Ford model B, minor variations I'm sure.

One of the problems is that we don't always realise just how small early cars were - the Bullnose Morris you mention had a wheelbase of 6'8" and a width of 3'11".

Having driven 1930's sports cars, there ain't a lot of room for two modern people side by side! (but it makes gear changing interesting if your passenger is a young lady)

I know several people who use these but I found them to be to small when placed with my 28mm figs. I had a large box of them and then decided to switch over to 1/43 scale cars so I sold them all off. Its a shame to because they were easier to find.

I think some will fit and others won't. For instance, the Ford Model T truck is grotesquely oversized in the Matchbox line, and in that particular case, the Lledo one might work better (I've seen photos that look good, so I ordered a cheap one recently to see).

Section 8 also sent me down a rabbit hole of Russian models. I'm also taking a gamble on a Russian GAZ-A model, which looks great. It says 1:43, but a seller posted exact measurements that make it sound like it'll fit quite well with my Matchbox 1:48 stuff. We'll see when it gets here!

I can't get too greedy, since I already have plenty of cars (well, probably), but a few more are coming my way now.

If it helps, I have some photos of 28mm figures next to some of the Lledo vehicles:

Can't remember if it was Matchbox or Lledo but one of them did a box set of Austin 7 variants that scale well with 28mm figures. Perfect economy vehicle as they were pretty ubiquitous.

The same basic vehicle was also licence manufactured in Germany by BMW as the Dixi, equally popular there.  Odd bit of trivia, the Dixi was the car that the Reichswehr utilised  for the canvas and plywood tanks they used in their exercises, real tanks being prohibited by Versailles. I've toyed with the idea of making the mock tank superstructure for one of mine.

Just picked up a Lledo car by chance today at local thrift store. It's a Ford Model A panel van. Scales out at 1/53. Pretty close.
