I always wanted to game this
I used to be with it, but then they changed what it was. Now what I'm with isn't it anymore and what is it seems weird and scary.

It's a nice period, full of adventures. I think this is one of the last exotic and romantic adventure in french history, wich end in 1847 with the surrending of Abd el kader. The following is just military walk, "promenade militaire". Except perhaps the "tonkin "in 1880's)

You forgot the Dahomey in the list of exotic places, my friend  ;)
Or maybe there were young half-naked amazons in Algeria ?  :D
"The enemy? His sense of duty was no less than yours, I deem. You wonder what his name is, where he came from. And if he was really evil at heart. What lies or threats led him on this long march from home. If he would not rather have stayed there ... in peace. War will make corpses of us all."

Western Soudan (today Mali) in the 1880s was not so easy and was quite adventurous too. There are some interesting old books about it.
