Need some help with finding suitable references of a cajun town
« on: September 02, 2010, 03:06:43 PM »
Well the title says it all ;)
I'm doing a small 4 board project and I'm looking for good pictures of a dark, evil, murky, Chtuluesque swamp town (it doesn't have to be Louisiana folks!). But I just end up with people catching cat fish, hillbillies with loads of weapons and not a single good photo.
The basic concept of the board is that there is a river that passes by a remote fishing village in the middle of the swamp. Just bring up every dark image you have in your mind about remote villages situated in the middle of the impassable nowhere ;)
By the way, no pictures of stuff from Devon or Cornwall, that place still gives me nightmare :D

The board is supposed to be a modular board that switches between 1940 CoC, a modern zombie setting and dinousaur hunting in the depths of Darkest Africa.
So if you have any picture, and this is obviously a matter of opinion, please post here so I can start doing the basic sketching :)

I almost forgot; If you know any suitable Cajun miniatures I'll be happy as hell :) So far I only got the vodoo priests from Brigade as suitable minis, should need some more :)

Kind regards,
S

Couldnt find goods ones and have been googling. I think your best bet would be to look to films;

Southern Comfiort is set in the Bayous and has a nisty little village

Or POTC Worlds End has a nice swamp village on stilts and all

Alos images form the Left 4 Dead 2 Swamp fever mission

Even in the swamps the towns are built on high ground (or what passes for it down there). Most old west building will suffice if you put them up on brick support pillars and add screen doors. Paint them a faded grey or thin whitewash.

Overall emphasize the poverty and the neglected state of the structures. Tin roofs with half missing, moss and weeds growing all over. A wagon or two rotting away, left where they were last used. A burn pile with the metals bits and tin cans that wouldn't burn up, along with a rib or two.

During the 30's the US govt took thousands of photos of the region - try image searches for WPA and FSA mixed with keywords like cajun and bayou.

Cajun folk don't dress differently to other 'rural' Americans, it's just their language and traditions that are different. Brigade games do some 'Boondockers' in their Atomic Cafe '57 range you might think suitable. The Perry ACW house should be ideal too!

Shotgun House (narrow and very deep) and Creole Cottage (more usual dwelling)

and here.

Thanks for the response guys! :-*
Perry Houses are on the to-buy-list already!

And great tip about the archives, the latter actually turned out some perfect houses!

You might also rent the movie Belazaire the Cajun.  I believe that it was filmed in a historic village or one that is meant to interpret the cajun past to the public.  The movie is great too (One of my personal favorites) so it won't be painful to sit through.  Oh, and did I mention it has great music!

I found this video useful, you might have to watch it several times before you notice any background detail though. Probably not work-safe either. The song sucks though.

Thanks for the vid, Jim! I got some glimpse of houses there ;)

@Curtis:

;)

And my friends have already been talking about Deliverance, in fact, one is converting a bow wielding man with a beatufil sach!

The build can be found in this threadby the way. I'm aiming to finish up this board, and then maybe a second river section to the right of the board (well, up is the smaller delta-part), and after that I'll have two boards on the width to stack to the north so I get both a fishing community and then some more houses :)
Really fun project, and I wouldn't have been able to start it up without the lovely links you gentlemen have provided! So I thank you :)

Second attempt at a reply.  My first one appears to have gone to Limbo!

If it's not too late, you might want to take a look at the movie Scorchers.  It's one of those lost little films with an amazing cast - James Earl Jones, Faye Dunaway, Denholm Elliott, Emily Lloyd and the always delectable Jennifer Tilly.  Filmed in Louisiana bayou country, it starts out with a trip upriver which ends at a waterside shack that might give you some inspiration.  It's what I'd call a 'nice' film and leaves you with a good feeling after watching it.

Of course, there's also Swamp Thing for a different take on things.  Great scenery, and I don't just mean Adrienne Barbeau!

Oh, and don't forget the 'gators!
