Hands of the Ripper was always my favourite Hammer Horror film, as I was never much into vampires.

An irresponsible relative let me stay up late to watch it when I really was too young to be viewing such things. It terrified me but I absolutely loved the lurid nonsense.

Saw this on BBC Four tonight, was quite interesting and a little inspiring! :)

Next week is Hammer! :o :)

I am?

Sorry, I just realized Mark Gatiss is that flamboyantly chap who's written about Lucifer Box, or am I confusing him with someone else?

Not sure what you all are complaining about, 'hope it's on'...

Us across the pond won't see it for YEARS, if then. *huff*

As for Hammer, most older Yanks are quite aware, thank you. However, it took awhile before I discovered how 'risque' they were. Pan-and-scan for TV, and even drive in movies, meant there were many times when I was trying to figure out why the action was off the side of the screen, in the few cases they didn't have alternate scenes shot.

I've been tracking down 'uncut' ever since.  :D

Actually a load of obscure Hammer films have just been released on Region 2 DVD, including The Gorgon and The Curse of the Werewolf (Oliver Reed's first starring role!).  Also 1957's seminal Night of the Demon - not a Hammer, incidentally, and based on M.R. James' Casting the Runes - is getting a definitive Region 2 release tomorrow.  Luckily it's my birthday in little over a week...

Oh yes, this is out next Friday, too!

I must get Curse of the Werewolf and that book is a very good price especially with the free postage  :D

The Vampire Brides rocks!  (nekkid, lesbian vampires)

And that one with Peter Cushing/Lee which was a campy, James Bond type thriller, about the cult, Dracula with a doomsday biological weapon, secret agentrs, and lots of nudity.

Also love The Gorgon, and that one with Roddy McDowelll as curator of a museum.

That would be The Satanic Rites of Dracula (or Count Dracula and his Vampire Bride as it was/is known Stateside).  Have to say of the two 'modern day' Hammer Dracula's I much prefer Dracula AD 1972, but then the world would be such a boring place if everybody liked the same trashy horror films...

I thought those were all the same thing; as both of the first titles are found on this side of the briney, and I got tired of it appearing to be the only Christopher Lee Dracula a) I could find, b) a modern Drac that wasn't a spoof, which I prolly rather have, and c) kept re-buying because of title confusion. I'll go back through my stack and make sure they are different.

I wouldn't be certain one wasn't miss-titled as the second film and just another copy of the first.  ::)

Still, I've been finding the vaguely Victorian Dracula films, and  won't complain that I've never seen The Gorgon.

I just remembered, I recently referred to 'Curse...' when viewing Pappa Midnight's werewolf conversion (DO LOOK!).

Tell me the shredded shirt doesn't remind you of Reed's transformation scenes!

Watched parts 1 & 2 yesterday - excellent program, my two fav. eras of horror!

Also Mark Gatiss stars in 'The First Men in the Moon' tonight at 9.00 on BBC 4
