Tips on Painting Horses
« on: 28 October 2010, 07:22:24 AM »
Ok experts! I need some tips on painting horses. I haven't painted a horse in years probably since the early 90's Imperial Guard Rough Riders I seem to remember and I made a mess so got a friend to do them for me in the end. Any tips for getting a better result this time around?

I hate painting horses. I usually don't plug GW but they have a very good and quick method here.

When i paint horses I tend to have more of the highlight showing then on other figures, ie rather then just small highlights i go for large areas of highlight

check out my bretonnian army thread for some images.

Sorry that doesnt really explain it well does it?

That is an excellent primer. Bookmarked for future reference, thanks Hammers.

Never been a fan of GW, but there's absolutely no question they have top-flight painters. They write a good tutorial, too.

One of these days my miniature wanderings are going to encompass 28mm cavalry (Cossacks in BoB, likely) or I'll get back into 15mm fantasy and will need to paint horses again!

Two of the best tutorials on painting horses I've ever seen!  Great.  A little trick I use is to come back after painting the horse - and rider and tack if there - and use a bit of gloss medium (from an art or craft store) and use it to 'sheen' up the horses coat.  (After any use of matte sprays to seal the figure, by the way.)  I'm sure its not to everyone's taste but, for me, it really takes horses from flat and dull to popping on the table.  To my eye it just looks better.  And, naturally, for me this is in 15 mm.  Be curious if anyone tries it in 25 mm.

A CANADIAN local hobby store with a small selection of historical wargames miniatures (mainly from Warlords). They also have a great selection of paint and hobby accessories from Vallejo, Army painter, AK Interactive, Green Stuff World and more.; https://tistaminis.com/
