Tips on painting straw
« on: March 04, 2014, 10:24:51 PM »
I am doing a few Ashigaru who are wearing straw capes, does anyone have any recommendations on how to do decent looking straw capes? What colours to use and what techniques. I imagine it's brown as a base highlighting or dry brushing up to a lighter more yellow colour but I could be very wrong.

Depending on what it was, straw can rapidly weather to a greyish colour (rather like wood does - wood left outside soon goes grey rather than brown), so that might be an option. If these are Japanese, I guess rice straw would be the predominant material. Is it worth googling "rice straw thatching" or something similar to see if it brings up pictures that might help?

Measure with a micrometer, mark with chalk, cut with an axe, hammer to fit, paint to match!
