Might I suggest some sort of thickening band along the top of the sides to add a bit of robustness and detail?

Damnit, Jim! I'm a model-maker not a magician!

I had thought about that... I'm still not sure how to deal with the cut-away curve on the prow, and was hoping no one would notice ;D I'll have a ponder as to how. I was thinking some piping along the top but can't think of anything pliable enough. So I might just settle for a strip of ardboard around the boat.

Remington: I'll check out the pics. Tried to this morning on my fiancee's phone but didn't get very far. Thanks for the tip!

Thanks for the kind words grey... er... Blackwolf ;) What happened to your handle?

Well, I think I can finally say "It's taking shape". Here she is:

As always, check out the blog for some more piccies.

By the way, Remington. When you said "I am really looking forward to seeing how you'll build your wheel at the back" my first thought was "So am I!". But, I think I've something useful... but I suspect it might be a little on the chunky side:

Otherwise I'm a bit stumped on what to use for the paddle ??? I am following up Benbow's 1/35 artillery wheels as an option but haven't come up with anything decent so far...

And just on that, I must say that the ships people have put together in the past have been a great guide for me building this and I am constantly going back to some incredible threads. I hope I can add something to the LAF pool of knowledge rather than just duplicate it.

But, in the mean time I'd really appreciate some ideas!

Well, I quite like that wheel. It is a bit chunky but because I cannot tell the scale it's difficult to judge. If something is chunky it's the outer rim so maybe you could replace that. The one at Tactica had a weird looking wheel component where the spokes slightly came forward. So the outer rim and inner rim were not on the same lvl. No idea what they used though.

Yerah I've been having many a look at the mdoel you're referring to. Thanks for the tip!

Not much of an update tonight, although Painting Princess helped me out a fair bit tonight - I just haven't taken photos yet.

I guess this won't be finished this weekend as I'd hoped (need to wake up for work in 7 hours!). Anyway, here's what I will have to play with!

There are plenty more pics on the blog so have a look :)

I've also swapped around the bottom cabins so I have more room for the boiler and top-deck play area (where the big gun/pavillion will go).

Nice collection... Now would you be so kind and let us know where you got all these beauties from? A friends (and no, I actually mean a friend! :D I got enough on as it is. ) wants to build a boat as well and he'd be very thankful for the info.

Great build thread...keep going!

Some of those bits look like the Reviresco ones. They do some very nice colonial deck fittings and guns.

thejammedgatling is pretty much spot on!

The rails, portholes, ship's wheel etc. all came from Reviresco: http://www.tin-soldier.com/cgi-bin/ustorekeeper.pl

The coiled ropes, deck guns (Nordenfeld etc.), and swivel guns came from Eureka: http://www.eurekamin.com.au/

The plastic crates, sandbags and other stuff is from an HO Cargo set from Faller.

The stowage is a mix of items in 1/48, mostly from Tamiya.

I hope this "friend" of yours is going to build a boat for your Russians!  lol

The doors I made earlier were scratch built from styrene, and using a porthole from Reviresco. Very handy. Also, if you get a chance to check out the latest Foundry/Dallimore publication there's a decent steamer in there. And as always, you've got the gorgeous work of the resident LAF-ers.

Hope this helps!

If you are still stumped for a paddle wheel, I believe that Lindberg still makes a close to scale model of either ther Southern Belle or Robert E Lee stern wheeler.  It also has some useful bits like stacks and boilers.

Thank you, Christian! I am sure this... "friend" might accept my help in building it and maybe we can make interchangeable flag receptacles. ;) But I was being truthful! My friend does exist! My imaginary friends have all moved abroad.

Remington: Ha ha, well I look forward to seeing it anyway! Glad I could be of help.

S J Donovan: I had a look at the models you mentioned. More options are always good!

No pictures tonight although some progress has been made on the pilot house. I have some nice little ideas for it so I'll wait until it's finally constructed to show everyone :D

I like the use of a blanket roll for the window curtain  8) Are you going to put in some sort of support for the front window?

cheers

Indeed... That is a fine "miss-use" of the blanket. Very clever... :)
