Cheap 28mm model train - Goldlok
« on: 21 November 2010, 06:21:49 PM »
So, I've seen this in this forum before, but normally there are no pictures. So here's my contribution, so that all those doubts about this model are erased.

Anyone interested in acquiring a cheap model train for 28mm wargaming needs to find one of these: Goldlok "Western Express - Classic Express" train set. It's really cheap for €9,99 and comes with a 30" x 42" oval railway, more than enough to make some good terrain. The locomotive's cockpit is occupied by the batteries and motor, but I've seen around the forum that you can take them out to accommodate one or two minis.

Here's the pics:
The box:

There is also another set with a crane instead of a carriage, and a coal carrier instead of livestock carriage, I might get that one as well if I can find it again.
Personally, I'm going to prime my train set completely and paint it for some sci-fi gaming. Maybe a little conversion will be in order. Happy hunting for this!

Found the other model! Called the "Golden Creek - Classic Express", it has a crane and a box carrier, the boxes are designed to be lifted by the crane and are hollow and bottomless. Unfortunately the crane is very shoddy and doesn't stay in place. Needs a little work to get going at first.

Here's a pic of the box:

Say, did you happen to find it at any shop of name? Perhaps other European countries have it as well in their version of that store.

Unfortunately I bought it from a national brand of supermarkets, and as far as I know there are none outside Portugal... We do have InterMarché here, which is popular in France, I'll see if they carry the same products.

Remember it's Chrismas time, so the supermarkets are filled with cheap plastic toys.  This brand doesn't seem like it stocks only one chain of stores. Maybe you have them on your area too.

mmm that would be a great addition to my victorian and pulp games indeed.
Where do you find it? (maybe in spain we have some), we have intermarche too.
who's the manufacturer? whats the brand in the left lower corner? the one with the elephant logo.

I think is time to gather some toy store flyers.

In the U.S. Toys R Us stores produce at least two versions of the Western Express.  The company that produces them for Toys R Us is Fast Lanes.  The Toys R Us versions come with a coal tender, two passenger cars, a freight car and a caboose.  The only real difference in the two Toys R Us versions I've seen is the engine.  One engine is the classic Iron Horse model and the other is a more modern looking engine without the big smoke stack of the Iron Horse type.  Sorry, I can't provide any information about European availability.

@Donpimpom: the brand is Goldlok, the logo has 2 elephants, a large yellow one and a smaller purple one. Over here I bought it in a supermarket called "Pingo Doce". If you are ever near Portugal, finding one isn't hard.

They do a similar one at our local newsagents (chain, can't remember the name) - £6 or 2 for £10. I really must pick them up.

Which town? I'm not far from Cheshire, so might be worth a visit.
