A Bugsda/Svennn/Copplestone co-production
« on: January 13, 2011, 02:46:04 PM »

I bought these off Svennn last year sometime, they came based and white primed so I thought I'd try out that Army Painter gunk.

Quick tosh over with paint, slap on the quick shade, when dry reinstate the colours, quick tweek and Bob's your Auntie's bed slave  8)

I was impressed with the stuff, it's not as much fun as painting but it's much quicker.
Well I've lead an evil life, so they say, but I'll outrun the Devil on judgement day.

Lovely result but it ain't the way to salvation, Bugsda.

I say we muster a posse of like minded, upright Christian painters, tar him in Army Painter and feathers and throw him out of town!

I've had a similar dabbling with the Dark Arts when it comes to GW's new Washes. After mocking them as just watered-down and feeble imitations of inks, I actually picked up a jar of Devlan Mud (know thy enemy, etc) and damned if it isn't useful... sure, I could water down my existing inks and paints (and I really still miss GW's red ink, brilliant colour) but existing bottles of stuff are always easier at hand.

Devlan Mud + Reaper MS Bone Shadow makes a very good British serge for WW1/WW2 uniforms, for example.

Leave me out of this.

 ;)

Nice work on the figures! I can't even tell what Army Painter did to it but it sure looks nice.

They look bloody brilliant to the point I am not too sure I would have known tbh.

Wirelizard - I'm with you on this. Painted a WW2 Russian sniper on wednesday. Blocked in the colours with thin paint. GW wash with black on rifle, face guard, boots, bag, gloves and webbing; Devlan mud on everything else. Came out pretty good and took about 15 minutes. OK, the figure is lying down so only 50% to paint.
I think of it as 'selective' dipping.

The true test will be when Nick get's his Texians back  lol

Just joking Nick   ;)

I found they take about half the time and about a quarter of the effort of painting on 3+ layers. Of course they don't look as good but need must when your washing machine packs up.   lol

They look pretty good from where I'm sitting.  Well done on the painting, and having the courage to 'come out'. lol

Looks good. Which strength of gunk was it?

C’est magnifique, mais ce n’est pas la guerre: c'est de la folie.

Somehow they don't look like they've just crawled out of a dirty ditch, which models treated this way usually do. That is an achievement in itself. There still ought to be a bloody law against it.  :)

Now you mention it, I can tell the difference, but I don't think I would have been able to otherwise.

I guess it's like most things. If you are good at something, then even using substandard tools you can still get a good result, because it's about how you use the medium rather than the medium itself. In the hands of a skilled painter, the gunk becomes just another tool of the trade.

It is (he said, waxing philosophical) rather like photography. I know a bloke who spent thousands on a supercharged posh camera, and his photos are still not much use. Equally, i know a very talented photographer who can take pictures with a chuckaway camera and they still look brilliant. It's to do with an artistic eye I think, and mastery of technique. Bugsda could probably paint figures with dirt and soup and they'd still pass muster  ;)

I think I shall put this to test, using only what I find around the house. And I mean around the house, not inside it.
Drawback: there is only lime mud, sheep shit and slush.
Advantage: there is a lot of it.
