Building a Western Town (update 2011-02-06)
« on: January 19, 2011, 09:27:24 AM »
I never have enough projects (or rather, too much free time due to unemployment), so I thought it was worthwhile to work on some western building, or rather yet a town for our Legends of the Old West campaing that my regular group will start playing soon.

After some brainstorming with a friend about the size of the houses, I decided to use the catons in which Tea-bag come. Too keep things a simple as possible, I decided to not use any glue at all, but double sided adhesive tape and (wooden) coffee stirrers. Here are the "raw" materials:

After cutting the stirrers to the desired length I surrounded the carton with the tape and just pushed the wooden planks onto it. A quick brown spray paint and some drybrushing later gave me my first building.

The door and window are just plain card (left overs from the box itself),but I'll use matchstick for the next buildings. The front is probably a bit to high, but I'll be certain about that afer I have introduced the logo. The building has no roof as of yet, I'll be working on that later on in the week. I will just be going a plain flat roof, to facilitate placement of models on top, something, I hope will happen during our games.

More to come in the following weeks

Good to see you went along with the Teabag carton. I felt it should be about right, but wasn't completely sure. Any ideas on making the roof?

While watching Tombstone again yesterday (love Val Kilmer as Doc Holiday!) I made a few small items for our town as well. We really need to find a place to get a zillion coffeestirrers though :D

I have removed the card door and window and put in a wooden frame made out of match sticks. The name on the front ia s printout from foundry.

As well as "upgrading the building, I started to work on some gallows. Not only an item often featured in movies, but also in one of the scenarios from Legends of the old west.

A few items have been put together to make the table look just a bit better:

And last but not least, an overview shot:

Really nice start to your town.  Your dressmakers must be the beginning of a chain as they have one in my town too ...

I'll be damned! Well maybe I'll have to visit your settlements in due time to see if the personal is less rude over there ;)

Some dark brown paint has been slapped on the gallows, followed by gently drybrushing with ochre and grey.

Still need to add some rope, which will follow shortly...

Next to this I tried to build a water tower:

The reservoir was build using a GW spraycan lid, double sided tape and lots of coffe stirrers. I'm not keen on the structure, it makes me thin more of a structure for an oil-drill, then for a water tower, so I started building a new structure. I can always make this one longer and tunr it into a windmill.

Next up, another building:

The foam will me scored to resemble a brickwall. Adding doors, windows and a roof and the Sherriffs office is ready do be used (very usefull for jailbreak scenarios)

To finish it off, a here are a few pictures of our first game :)

And another small update :)

finished scoring the foam yesterday and decided to give the sheriffs office it's paintjob before glueing on any doors and windows:

not sure yet about the brickwork. In RL it shows more depth, but I might give it another light drybrush, just to make it stand out more. Still need to do the roof and bars and want to keep them removable.

Also finished water tower Mk. 2:

I decided that it would be a nice idea to have the wood of the water tank looking a bit "fresher" then the wood of the structure below it.

Allthough the project is still going strong, though I'm running out of coffee stirrers at an alarming rate... :S
