Dust Tactics: painted miniatures & terrain (updated)
« on: February 12, 2011, 12:44:35 PM »
The first part of my Dust Tactics project is finished.

All the miniatures have been painted up to tabletop standard using Quickshade.
This was my first experience with Quickshade and I must say that I'm impressed with the result.
The extra protection it gives the miniatures feels comforting, knowing the miniatures will be moved one squad at a time, by a single hand...

I have started the next part of the project, which involves making terrain pieces to substitute the cardboard terrain.

Thanks for watching!

Thanks. Well, they are cheap compared to most minis too...  ;)
I think the quality is fair, and the detailing is ok. I'd definitely call them price-worthy.
I just don't get the twisting torso, so I glued my minis in fixed positions...

LOL! Exactly the other way around for me - Darkson is too flimsy and tiny, while SotR is too chunky for me. DUST infantry wins by far  for me - taste...

Thank you.

I will probably need to create some more hard cover. The low barricades was easy enough to make.
I have an idea of adding barbed wire on top of the low barricades, to have them act as see through hard cover, much like the tank traps.
Only these squares will not be possible to enter.
Some high barricades or regular walls will probably be needed too, and perhaps some ruined buildings.

This all looks quite nice, I like the underground bunker enterance a lot.
I think you went a bit over board on the texture though, I'd tin it out a bit more...

I think he went with squares since that's how the Dust game is set up -- all movement is based on 6" wide squares on a tile board.
Play the game, not the players!

Thanks for the feedback.
Could you please elaborate on the texture matter. Too much or too grainy sand?

Yep, this is a board game based on squares so it was natural to go with that. :)
I also like to use the terrain for other games, so that's why I chose to not include any snow on the terrain.

Too much IMO, like the grains are too coarse, Whatever the mixture is, thin it out with more of the liquid component

Great construction - well done!  Personally, I'm rubbish at this kind of thing, but you've definately got 'the eye' for it.  I like the bunker entrances in aprticular.

I agree with the comment on the texture, but then again it depends what you are going to use it with.  Its perfect for an urban environment as it is, but would look funny on a green field.  A little bit of flock or small stones will break it up too.

Good show!  :D

Good points.
The secret mixture is sand, stolen from the local sand box. Grains size varies, but I get your point and I also prefer when the grains are smaller. Perhaps I can do another raid in a few months when the snow is gone.

As for usage, I prefer urban environments. Some of these terrain pieces might be used in ATZ.
