Planning the Hinterland Mounted Pack
« on: March 08, 2011, 06:49:23 PM »
Hi All,

So, as I pointed out in my other Hinterland thread, a pack of mounted ladies will be among the next batch of releases.  This will be a set of basic troopers, as opposed to a command pack, which will be in the release after that (I can only afford one pack of cavalry at a time).  So, bearing in mind that these are basic troopers, how should they be armed?  I see them with traditional lances, but a likely alternative is some kind of rifles, pistols, or swords.  Also, do you see them trotting with lances up and weapons holstered, or do you see them in a charge (although the eBob horses don't lend themselves to outright, hellbent-for-leather charges), with lances down and weapons drawn?

If the ladies are wearing huzzar buzbies like the foot figures then carbines would probably be most appropriate.

Alternatively, resculpt your pickelhaube heads in the mannty of WW1 german cavalry and the cavalry would look great with and lances.

Trotting horses please.

I like all the ones you listed;
Lances
Carbines
Pistols
Swords

What about making it weapon optional ie;
the weapon hand or arm is a separate piece and therefore you can offer choices.
Like how some of hasslefree's figures you can choose what weapon goes on the figure.

Regardless I look forward to seeing the cavalry.

Lances up or in the charge, both sound good to me.

I would prefer swords.

I think it would be too hard to use lances with sidesaddles.

Also I always liked models with swords and I think they would fit well with the princess model.

My problem with swords is that drawn swords are remarkably prone to breakage.  I like the new Mounted Princess mini because while she is obviously using her sword, in that it's not yet drawn, it's not in danger of breaking during shipping.  For these technical reasons, swords are low on my list of likely weapons (although they will doubtless HAVE swords hanging from belts).

I agree, but might I suggest that the pistol be a Mauser Machine Pistol style.  The ladies could use some serious firepower if called on to make a charge against other European cavalry.

I always saw cavalry as a close combat unit.

Jonas is right.  When mounted, they are a close combat unit.  They dismount to fire (cue the dismounted skirmishers & firing line figs), but when mounted ride in with sabres slashing!  These are Hussars, so definitely should be brandishing swords.  Uhlan (lancer) uniforms are quite different (but would look equally spiffy on a female trooper).   I've never had a problem with swords breaking on 28mm figures.

If the vote is split evenly enough, perhaps you should consider Amalric's suggestion of separate weapons/hands/arms.

Well, a Mauser was good enough for young Churchill. Served him well.

I agree with Tommy20 they are dressed as hussars, so should be sabre armed or carbine if you really don't like sword armed figures.

The C96 broomhandle mauser is a sexy pistol, as is the P08 Luger.
 :)
I love seeing hot women brandishing either!

Hmmmm. Swords would be practical, but lances would be awesome!

Well as the ladies are hussars,carbines, pistols and sabres. Remember hussars are light cavalry,their job is the klein kreig.I would also like to see the bridle on the horses the hussar style ie crossed across the horses forehead.

 And maybe down the track,the Cecilles? Slightly different horses of course as they are heavies and riding astride.
